Cashman has spoken to the agent of pitcher Ben Sheets, who fit the Yankees’ stated goal of addressing their starting pitching options for the 2010 rotation.According to Richard Durret, Sheets is looking for around $12 million, which is what he made in 2008 with the Brewers.
“It’s a short list and that list seems to be pricey right now,” Cashman said of his team’s interest in starting pitchers. “So we’ll see.”
With Rich Harden headed to Texas, that leaves Sheets as the best of the backup plans. Maybe an incentive laden deal like the one the Yankees gave Pettitte last season would get it done. Harden is going to make $6.5 million next year, and could make another $3.5 million in incentives. His deal also includes a mutual option and a $1 million buyout for the 2011 season.
There's no doubt this guy has great stuff, and if he stays healthy could be a big part of any team's rotation next year. If the Yankees don't land any of the other starters on the market I think Sheets might be their guy.
