The Boston Herald:
According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, the Red Sox have reached a one-year deal with third baseman Adrian Beltre that includes a player option.
The Herald had the details on the deal later:
he officially agreed to a one-year, $9 million deal with a $5 million player option for 2011, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions. Beltre can also earn a $1 million buyout if he reaches a plate appearances total commensurate with that of a regular, and the contract contains an escalator on the option that’s only triggered if he makes a significant number of plate appearances.
This is a good move for the Sox, who needed an upgrade at third. This also means that they will still likely try to trade the broken down Mike Lowell. There are rumors of a Lowell-for-Luis Castillo deal.
