The winter leagues regular seasons ended recently. Each league has started it’s league playoffs to come up with a representative for the Caribbean World Series. A few Yankees are involved.
MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE:
Ramiro Pena--INF--Culiacan---Pena’s Culiacan team is playing Mazatlan in round 1. Pena is the starting shortstop for Culiacan. He had a very good week going 9-17 with 3 rbis, and 3 runs scored. His week was highlighted by a 3-4 game (3 singles, 3 rbis, 2 runs) on Tuesday. During regular season MWL action he hit .247 in 26 games.
Jorge Vasquez--DH--Culiacan--Vasquez has struggled so far in the playoffs as Culiacan’s DH. So far he’s 3-25 with 1 homer, a solo shot for his only rbi and run scored. He showed some real power during MWL regular season action with 11 homers and 26 rbis in 32 games. He played at AA Trenton in 09 hitting .329 in 57 games, with 56 rbis and 13 homers.
Jon Weber--OF---Mazatlan---Weber was signed to a minor league deal by the Yankees and should be starting the year in the SWB outfield. He was in the Tampa organization in 2009 playing for AAA Durham. Weber’s gotten off to a slow start in the playoffs so far going 4-24 with 1 rbi and 1 run scored. He had an outstanding regular MWL season hitting .396 in 40 games with 7 homers, 29 rbis, and 13 doubles. Last year at AAA Durham he hit .302 with 14 homers and 26 doubles in 451 at bats.
DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE:
Juan Miranda--1B--Licey--Miranda rejoined his Licey team for the playoffs. Licey defeated Toros in the 1st round and is facing Gigantes in the 2nd round. Miranda so far has gone 8-20 with 2 doubles, 7 runs scored, 1 rbi, and 4 walks. He played in 13 DWL regular season games hitting. .409 with 2 homers and 11 rbis. In 2009 at SWB he hit .290 with 19 homers, 82 rbis, and 30 doubles.
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE:
Romulo Sanchez--RHP--Zulia--Sanchez has gotten off to a very rough start so far in 3 relief appearances. His first 2 games he registered 2 blown saves and 2 losses. 0.1 IP, 4 runs, 3 hits. During VWL regular season action he tossed 33 innings, 14 earned runs, 26 hits, 45 K’s---18 walks. In 2009 he relieved and started for SWB tossing. 64.2 innings with a 4.04 ERA, 29 earned runs, 66 hits, 64 K’s--34 walks.
Reegie Corona--INF--Maganelles--Corona has seen very limited action so far in the playoffs for Maganelles. He pinch hit in 1 game going 0-1. He had a fine regular season hitting .317 in 40 games. He split 09 between Trenton and as a backup for SWB hitting a combined .257.
