Both starters, Yankees ace CC Sabathia, and Philly's new ace Roy Halladay, both pitched two scoreless innings in their spring debuts. Halladay was his usual brilliant self--even this early in the spring--holding the Yankees hitless and striking out three. For CC things weren't as easy. He allowed two hits and walked two, but like CC said after the game, "Results don't start to matter until April 4."
Offensively the Yanks didn't do much over the first eight innings, just a few scattered hits. Philly was also held off the board by Yankee pitching over the first six, before going ahead on an Ozzie Chavez RBI double in the seventh. That came off Yankees reliever Romulo Sanchez.
The Yanks finally got on the board with two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 2-1 lead. David Winfree and Jose Gil drove in the runs. That lead wouldn't last very long because in the bottom of the inning the Phillies came back with two of their own off Wilkins Arias for the win. Paul Hoover doubled in the first run, and two batters later Wilson Valdez won it with an infield single.
