WP - J. Vazquez (3-0)
LP - J. Guthrie (1-4)
Tonight they jumped ahead of the Orioles 4-0 after one and a half, with the big blow coming off the bat of Robinson Cano, a three-run homer in the top of the first. The Yanks would hit two more homers on the night, a three-run blast by David Winfree in the sixth, and a solo shot by Marcus Thames in the seventh. Winfree led the team with four RBIs on the night.
Things almost took a turn for the worse when Mark Teixeira was nailed on the elbow by a Jeremy Guthrie fastball. Tex had to leave the game, but luckily he was only left with a bruise, doesn't need X-rays, and is listed as day-to-day. He said after the game that "at the very least, I’ll play Thursday."
Javier Vazquez was very good over the first four innings, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks, but ran into some trouble in the fifth. In the inning he allowed three runs on four hits, with all the runs coming on an Adam Jones three-run homer. Javy would pitch to, and retire, one batter in the sixth before being replaced by Joba Chamberlain. In 6.1 innings Vazquez allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 3, while throwing 96 pitches.
Joba was welcomed to the game with a single by Nolan Reimold, but retired the next two to get out of the inning. According to Chad Jennings, the Yankees had Joba's fastball clocking in at 93 MPH.
