Yanks Sign John Van Benschoten To Minor League Deal

According to Baseball America, the Yankees have signed John Van Benschoten to a minor league deal. Van Benshoten was the Pirates first round pick (8th overall) back in 2001, and according to Baseball America, was their top prospect in '03 and '04.

After three very good offensive years at Kent State, the Pirates decided to turn Van Benshoten into a pitcher. That didn't work so well, especially at the major league level. In 90 major league innings Van Benschoten is 1-3, with a 9.20 ERA. He's allowed 92 earned runs on 125 hits, walked 68, and struck out 65.

He's now 29, and coming off a year that saw him go 2-8, with a 6.35 ERA for Triple-A Charlotte (White Sox). His days of being a top prospect are over. But overall he's been a solid minor league pitcher (3.76 ERA over 8 seasons), so who knows, maybe he can find something with the Yanks.
