4/18 Minor League Report

================

(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (5-5) beat Buffalo (6-4) 4-3 in 10 innings: Box Score -Recap

MONTERO WATCH: Jesus Montero was 1-3 with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. He’s hitting .278. He hit 3rd in the lineup for the first time this year against the lefty starter. He had a passed ball, and executed a rundown play. He had a very nice tag at the plate on a throw home to save what could have been the winning run in the bottom of the 9th.

PITCHING: Ivan Nova made his 3rd start in this game. He came into the game with a 0.82 ERA allowing 1 run in his first 2 games over 11 innings. Buffalo wasted no time in the 1st jumping on Nova when Jason Pridie hit a leadoff homer to take a 1-0 lead. Nova also gave up a double in the inning. Buffalo scored a run in the 3rd on a walk, single, and double to take a 2-1 lead. They upped their lead to 3-1 in the 4th with a solo homer by Alex Cintron. Nova got the side out in order in the 5th and 6th innings. In the 7th, a leadoff double, passed ball on Montero, and walk put runners on 1st and 3rd. Nova got a groundball to 3rd that Kevin Russo threw to Montero to get the runner out in a rundown play. That was it for Nova as he left the game trailing 3-2 as once again the SWB offense gave him little run support. Nova had 11 groundouts--2 flyouts. 96 pitches--61 strikes. Nova’s line: 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 hits, 7 K’s--2 walks. ERA 2.04.

Royce Ring relieved Nova in the 7th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 out. He got the only man he faced on a groundout to get out of the inning.

Mark Melancon came on to pitch a scoreless 8th giving up a single. In the 9th, a walk and single put Melancon in trouble. He then gave up another single to left but Chad Huffman threw the runner out at the plate trying to score the winning run. A nice tag by Montero on the play saved the game. Melancon got the win (2-0). 2.0 IP, 0 runs, 3 hits.

Jonathan Albaladejo came on to pitch the 10th. He gave up 2 singles to start the inning. A bunt was turned into a force out at 3rd on a nice play by Albaladejo He got the next 2 outs on a strikeout and grounder to pick up his 3rd save. 1.0 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits.

OFFENSE: Bobby Livingston got the start for Buffalo. Eduardo Nunez singled and stole 2nd base in the 1st but was stranded. In the 3rd, Nunez singled and stole 2nd again. Jesus Montero
walked and David Winfree followed with a rbi double to tie the score at 1. SWB blew a great scoring chance in the 4th. when they loaded the bases with 1-out on a single by Chad Huffman, Colin Curtis HBP, and a Reegie Corona walk, but could not score. The Yankees wasted a leadoff single in the 5th by Jesus Montero. The Yanks pushed a run across in the 6th to cut the Buffalo lead to 3-2. Curtis doubled and Corona had a rbi single. Down to their last out in the 9th, Nunez hit his first AAA homer to tie the score at 3. Nunez had 3 singles and 2 stolen bases prior to that homer. In the 10th, Winfree and Jon Weber singled. Huffman had a sac bunt to move the runners up to 2nd and 3rd. Colin Curtis was intentionally walked to load the bases with 1 out. Juan Miranda came out to pinch-hit for Greg Golson and hit a deep rbi sac fly to give SWB the lead and win.

NOTES: Zach McAllister gets the start Monday as the series continues.... Tampa's Andrew Brackman has been placed on the 7-day DL.
