(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (7-7) lost to Syracuse (9-5) 8-1: Box Score - Recap

MONTERO WATCH: Jesus Montero

made his 3rd start of the season. He came into the game 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA. Syracuse got to Hirsh in the 1st inning for a 3-0 lead on a HBP, sac bunt, and rbi single by Kevin Mench (that’s right, that Kevin Mench), and 2-run homer by Chase Lambin. Hirsh worked out of a jam in the 2nd after giving up 2 singles. He had a scoreless 3rd inning with a walk. Hirsh got the side in order with 2 strikeouts in the 4th. Syracuse scored a run in the 5th on a walk, single, and rbi groundout by Mench to make it 4-1. Chris Duncan (Shelley’s brother), had a solo homer in the 6th to up the Chiefs’ lead to 5-1. Hirsh’s line: 6.0 IP, 5 ER, 6 hits, 6 K--2 walks, 98 pitches--62 strikes.

Kevin Whelan
came on to pitch the 7th and continued to struggled. 3 doubles and an error scored 3 more runs for Syracuse before an out was made. Whelan got the next 2 hitters out and was relieved. Whelan’s line: .2 IP, 3 runs, 2 ER, 3 hits, 1 K-0 walks, ERA 16.62.

Zack Segovia
relieved Whelan in the 7th with a runner on 3rd and 2 men out. He got a strikeout to get out of the inning as Syracuse upped their lead to 8-1. Segovia got in and out of a jam in the 8th. He gave up a leadoff double and wild pitch to put a runner at 3rd with nobody out. He then got 2 K’s and a groundout to get out of the jam. Segovia’s line: 1.1 IP, 0 runs, 1 hit, 3 K’s--0 walks, ERA 12.27.

OFFENSE: Shairon Martis
RHP got the start for Syracuse. SWB picked up a run in the 2nd on walks to Jesus Montero and Colin Curtis. Chad Huffman singled to load the bases and Jon Weber had a rbi sac fly to cut the Chiefs lead to 3-1. That was all the scoring for the Yanks as they never mounted another threat in the game. Eduardo Nunez walked in the 3rd, Jon Weber singled in the 4th, Juan Miranda had a leadoff single in the 6th, Kevin Russo a leadoff single in the 8th, Curtis had a single in the 9th but they could not score.

NOTES: Eduardo Nunez
came into the game 3rd in the IL in batting with a .380 BA. He had his 7 game hit streak snapped in this game as his average dropped to .358. SWB has played 14 games so far all against Buffalo and Syracuse. They don’t play division rival Pawtucket Red Sox until June 20th, go figure.
