Andy Pettitte has not had a lot of luck with weather this spring, it seems that everytime he was scheduled to pitch the game would be washed away by rain. Today, he finally got some good weather and was able to pitch in a regular spring game for the first time since March 17th, and pitched pretty well. In 4.1 scoreless innings, the veteran southpaw scattered seven hits, walked one, and struck out one.
”I felt like my command maybe could have been a little bit better with my fastball,” Pettitte said. “Other than that I felt really good. I did get a little tired there at the end which I knew was going to happen because even though I threw 100 pitched my last time out, you just can’t simulate the adrenalin and having batters in there… The biggest reason I needed it was to build my stamina up, because you can’t build your stamina up in simulated games because it’s just not real.” (source: Chad Jennings)
Mariano Rivera pitched an inning in relief and wasn't sharp, but was also hurt by some shoddy defense. After uncharacteristically walking the leadoff hitter, he got two quick outs. That was followed by something even more rare for Mo, when he hit Felix Pie on the ankle with a cutter that got away. Cesar Izturis then loaded the bases with a perfectly placed weak grounder towards the middle, just beating out the throw by Robinson Cano. Mo then got Robert Andino hit a grounder to third, but Cano dropped the throw to second, allowing two runs to score. The O's would tac on a third run with a single by Nolan Reimold.

The Yankees offense got off to a quick startt today, scoring four times in the first. Nick Swisher came through with the big hit, a two-run homer capping off the four-run rally. Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano also drove in runs in the inning. Randy Winn and Luis Nunez drove in the other two Yankee runs.

Mark Teixeira had a nice game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, bringing his Grapefruit League average to .362. Cano finished the spring with a .377 average and a team-leading 12 RBI. A-Rod also had a good spring, finishing at .333. We already heard about Swisher's day, he finished with a .313 average.

Jon Weber was given the James P. Dawson Award today for the team's best rookie in camp. He finished hitting .452/.452/.581 with 6 RBI in 31 at-bats.

The Yankees made a roster move today, reassigning Royce Ring to minor league camp. That leaves Boone Logan, who threw another scoreless inning today, as Sergio Mitre's only real competition for that final bullpen spot.

Tomorrow, the Yankees will face the team's future stars in Tampa. The game will be at 1:05 p.m., and will be on YES. After that, the team will head north to begin their quest for #28 in Fenway on Sunday.
