News & Notes
- As you can see, Joe Girardi has decided to go with Marcus Thames against the lefty. Not the best way to reward Brett Gardner for his solid opening night. If the Yankees are going to figure out if Gardner can play everyday, they're going to have to give him a few shots against lefties.
- Phil Hughes has joined the team. He will stay until his next extended spring start on Saturday, when he's set to throw 110 pitches.
- Because of the off day on Monday, Joba Chamberlain is available out of the pen tonight.
- In 12 career starts against the Red Sox, A.J. Burnett is 5-2, with a 4.23 ERA. Last year he went 0-2, with an 8.85 ERA in four starts. In Fenway, he's 3-2, with a 5.35 ERA, and last year in Boston he was 0-2, with an ugly 14.21 ERA.
- Jon Lester is 3-1, with a 3.88 ERA in 8 career starts against the Yankees. Last year he went 1-1, with a 4.43 ERA against them.
Here's how some former Yankees did on Opening Day yesterday:
- Johnny Damon: 2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R.
- Austin Jackson: 1-for-5, 2B, RBI, R, 2 K's.
- Phil Coke: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.
- Melky Cabrera: 0-for-5, BB, R.
- Hideki Matsui: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R ... This guys sure has a flair for the dramatic, doens't he? Two teams in the majors and he's homered in both of his first home openers.
