News & Notes

  • According to Buster Olney, the Yankees have claimed OF Chad Huffman on waivers from the Padres. The right-hand hitter will report to Scranton. Here's what Chad Jennings had to say about Huffman:
Baseball America ranked Huffman as the Padres’ No. 21 prospect. The magazine acknowledged his power but said he’s pull-happy and has trouble with offspeed pitches. He was labeled an “adequate” defender. “He looks like a future regular on his best days and a part-timer on his worst,” BA wrote.
  • In 36 games (34 starts) against the Red Sox, Andy Pettitte is 18-9, with a 3.74 ERA. Last year he went 2-1, with a 3.75 ERA in 4 starts. He's also done well in Fenway throughout his career, going 7-3, with a 3.90 ERA. Last year in Boston, Andy went 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in two starts.

  • Even though Pettitte didn't get too much work this spring, he should be able to throw 100 pitches tonight.

  • John Lackey is making his debut for Boston tonight. As an Angel he was 5-7, with a 4.66 ERA in 16 career starts against the Yankees. During the regular season last year, he went 1-0 with in one start, allowing just 2 ER and 6 hits over 7. As a visitor, Lackey is 2-5, with a 5.75 ERA in Boston.

  • Joe Girardi said we probably won't see Joba Chamberlain tonight. He doesn't mind using him on back-to-back nights, but for now will try to stay away from using him in 3 games out of 4.
