Top Prospects Romine and Bleich on Trenton Roster

Though the roster will not be official until prior to first pitch on opening day, April 8th. Today the Trenton Thunder website has identifed 26 candidates for the 24 man roster. They are:

Position Players:

Catchers: Austin Romine; Jose Gil

IF: Kevin Smith; Neall French; David Adams; Justin Snyder; Brandon Laird; Luis Nunez; Marcos Vechionacci

OF: Edwar Gonzalez; Dan Brewer; Damon Sublett; Austin Krum

Pitchers:

SP: Christian Garcia (1); Ryan Pope; Jeremy Bleich; David Phelps; D.J. Mitchell

RP: Wilkin De La Rosa (1); Lance Pendleton; Josh Schmidt; Cory Arbiso; Wilkins Arias; Noel Castillo; Grant Duff; Eric Wordekemper

(1) = On 40 man roster

Items of note:
  • Catcher Austin Romine is the highest ranked prospect on the roster, number 86 of Baseball America's top 100 major league prospects.

  • Pitcher Jeremy Bleich is on the Yankees top 10 prospect list with Romine.

  • Pitcher Christian Garcia impressed enough this spring to be named opening day starter.

  • OF Dan Brewer and LHP Wilkin De La Rosa are likely call ups to Triple-A at some point this season.

  • Very disappointed that Pat Venditte ("switch pitcher") didn't make the Trenton roster. He'll probably start in Tampa and hopefully he'll make it at some point this season.

  • Pichers Lance Pendleton and Wilkin De La Rosa, actually considered starters, will be in the bullpen probably to eat up innings.

  • Surprising that Josh Schmidt is back in Double-A after dominating last season, and having a good performance in the Venezuelan Winter League.

  • Scranton roster is still up in the air and that final decision will probably impact the Trenton team. 2 positions out of 24 left to be filled. They put PJ Pilittere and Jorge Vazquez on the DL to help alleviate some of the log jam. They are tossing around what to do with Kevin Whelan, Zach Zegovia and recent pick up Robby Hammock.

  • Former Thunder player and Yankee prospect Chris Malec, who was recently released, signed with Camden of the Atlantic League.
