Week One Review

The Yankees opened their season with a familiar foe, the hated Boston Red Sox. After an opening night loss the Yankees were able to take 2 of 3 to win the series. Heading down to another tough AL-East competitor in the Tampa Bay Rays, it was Deja-Vu all over again for the Yanks, losing the first game then taking the next two to win the series. Let's take a look at how our boys are doing thus far.

- Javier Vazquez had a rough debut in Tampa, as a number four starter there's not much to worry about here. Sure, we all want to forget his previous stint with the team, but he should be primed for a good year as long as New York doesn't eat him up.

- Joba's velocity is up and he looked good in a big spot against Boston. Though his appearance yesterday wasn't too impressive. Consistency is the key for Joba.

- Sabathia had a stellar performance in Tampa with a no hit bid through 7 2/3 innings, erasing his sub par performance on Opening Night.

- Chan Ho Park had a rough appearance but settled down in a stellar 3 inning performance against Boston.

- Andy Pettitte was the only Yankees starter to pitch well in Boston, showing he's still reliable, even as he approaches 38 years of age.

- A.J. Burnett followed up his rough opening start with a very solid outing yesterday in Tampa. So, like CC, he's getting things together fairly quickly.

- Mo is Mo. Enough said.

- The middle relief core looks strong with Park, D-Rob, Aceves and Marte.

- Derek Jeter looks slightly lost at the plate. His "Jeterian" swing is not there yet.

- Alex Rodriguez coming off a stellar (to put it mildly) post-season is hitting with RISP.

- Teixeira with a well documented 0-17 to start the year is hitting just .125

- Jorge Posada has started off the year very well offensively, hitting .353. On the other hand, his arm behind the plate has looked mediocre at best

- Robinson Cano looks comfortable in the #5 spot while Curtis Granderson had hit .300 against lefties to start the year in just under half his total AB's. That is a story to keep your eye on all season.

- The work Nick Swisher did this offseason seems to have paid off. His swing looks a lot better and he's started the year hitting .333.

- Nick Johnson never swings, but that hasn't stopped him from racking up a .367 OBP with the help of just three hits.

- Brett Gardner is making fans wonder why he isn't playing everyday. The speedster has started off the year very well. He's hitting .294 and has already driven in three runs and stolen three bases.

- Besides the offense, this team has also looked very good on defense. The addition of Granderson to that outfield already is paying off defensively. Have you seen many balls land in the gaps?
