bad news for A'stros. Yankees unlikely to become heavily involved in Oswalt. "we like our starters," one official said.Like I said yesterday, they don't need a starting pitcher right now, and won't need one down the road unless they suffer some major injuries, so this is no surprise. He's also signed through 2012 (club option in '12) @ $16 million per, and that money would be better spent on a guy like Cliff Lee, who's a free agent after this season.
As for something the Yankees are interested in, Jayson Stark wrote this today:
Clubs that have spoken with the Yankees say they haven't met to formulate their July shopping list yet. But with Randy Winn fizzling and Nick Johnson's future uncertain, we're hearing Yankees scouts have begun lightly targeting versatile outfield bats who could be available. One name in that category they've inquired about in the past: David DeJesus.DeJesus is a nice player, and would be a huge improvement over Randy Winn. So far this season he's hitting .272/.354/.428, with 4 HR and 15 RBI. Nothing special, but again, light-years past Winn.
I'm not sure about other targets. Mike Axisa at RAB threw out names like Gabe Gross, Austin Kearns and Ryan Church as other possibilities.
Who do you think the Yankees should target?
