The Yankees, in theory, could trade Francisco Cervelli this off-season to clear a spot for Double-A catcher Austin Romine, but one club official says the team would prefer to keep its inventory. Cervelli is a frequent trade target of rival clubs — the Tigers wanted him in the Curtis Granderson deal last winter. As we all know the Yankees are loaded with talented catchers in the minors, so trading Cervelli wouldn't do much to hurt this team's future. At least I don't think it would. But at the same time I love the way he plays the game, and I only think he will get better.
So, unless the Yankees were going to get a piece that would greatly improve their chances at no. 28 in return for a package that includes Cervelli, I'd really rather they held on to him.
