(AAA) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (17-4) beat Norfolk 5-1: Box Score - Recap

The SWB Yanks defeated the Norfolk Tides (Orioles) 5-1 to up their season record to 18-4.

PITCHING: Casey Fossum was picked up by SWB on a minor league deal. SWB was short starters with Phil Hughes in NY, and Ian Kennedy and Jason Johnson on the DL. Fossum was 0-0 with a 0.82 ERA with Buffalo. He was called up to the Mets and made 3 relief appearances before being released. Fossum threw scoreless 1st & 2nd innings. Norfolk tied the score at 1 in the 3rd on a bloop single, double, and wild pitch. Fossum got the first two men in the 4th before being relieved when he reached his pitch count.

Fossum's line: 3.2 IP, 1 run, 2 hits, 4 K's, 2 walks, 75 pitches-46 strikes, 4 groundouts-4 flyouts.

BULLPEN: Jose Valdez relieved Fossum in the 4th and got the final out of the inning. Valdez tossed scoreless 5th & 6th innings allowing 2 infield hits. He was credited with the win, 2-0.
Steven Jackson came on to finish the game with 3 shutout innings. He allowed 2 singles and picked up 2 strikeouts. Jackson picked up his 1st save.

OFFENSE: David Pauley started for Norfolk and flirted with disaster every inning he pitched. He worked out of bases loaded jams in the 1st and 3rd. SWB broke out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. Austin Jackson and Eric Duncan singled, PJ Pilittere laid down a sac bunt, and Luis Nunez got the run in with a ground out.

In the 4th, the Yanks picked up 4 runs. Pilittere singled, Luis Nunez doubled. Doug Bernier, John Rodriguez, and Todd Linden followed with RBI singles. Chris Malec drove in the 4th run of the inning on a bases loaded walk to give SWB a 5-1 lead. SWB had 10 hits 4 hits thru the first 4 innings. That was all the scoring in the game.

NOTES: Todd Linden extended his hit streak to 17 games. Chris Malec got the start at 1st base in place of Juan Miranda who was ill. Yankee pitching has held Orioles phenom Matt Weiters to 3 of 13 with 0 RBI in the first 3 games of the series. Eric Hacker makes his 2nd start for SWB Sunday in the series and homestand finale vs Norfolk.

Rehab Updates

Anthony Rieber has updates on Alex Rodriguez and Chien-Ming Wang from their extended spring training rehab game today. A-Rod played five innings in an extended spring training game against Pirates' minor-leaguers today. He went 0-for-6, and struck out twice. He also played the field for the first time. 20-year-old outfielder Gemmy Gonzalez hit a one-hopper to A-Rod, which he fielded cleaning and then threw out Gonzalez.

The plan is for him to take Sunday off before resuming game action tomorrow. A return to the Yankees next weekend in Baltimore still seems possible.

Rodriguez, who is recovering from March 9 hip surgery, called it "an important day." He still has not run the bases.

Wang pitched in the same game, and threw 52 pitches in four hitless innings, he walked two, struck out three.

"Chien-Ming Wang threw the ball very well today," Joe Girardi said. "So we were really encouraged. For Alex, it's just getting his at-bats. He came out of it very good."

Pretty good news all around.

CC Stinks Again, Yanks Lose 8-4

It was another rocky start for the Yankees $161 million dollar man. In 6.2 innings pitched CC Sabathia allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out five. He was having a good game until Derek Jeter's throwing error with one out in the sixth, but that led to a run, and then in the next inning he completely lost it, allowing another four runs on four hits. CC's outing today reminded me a lot of Pettitte's performance last night. I'm also starting to think the Joe Girardi may be pushing his starters a little too far, but then again, with this bullpen you pretty much have to.

Sabathia is now 1-3, with a 4.85 ERA, which is not exactly what you would want from your ace. To make matters worse, he was outpitched today buy a 30-year-old rookie with a 6.12 ERA, but I'll have more on Matt Palmer and the putrid effort by the Yankees offense in a minute.

First, I want to bring up the bullpen, and most importantly Jose Veras. On the third pitch he threw in the game Kendy Morales launched a 400 foot blast the Yankees bullpen in right. He ended up walking two in the inning as well but somehow got out of it without allowing another run. I know he had that one very good outing against Oakland last week, but besides that he's been pretty awful all season. I'm not sure what the Yankees should do, but he's a disaster waiting to happen every time he steps on that mound.

David Robertson was also shaky out of the pen, and like most Yankee relievers this year, he was killed by walks. In one inning he allowed two runs on one hit, walked two and struck out two.

If these guys are not going to throw strikes they don't belong in the majors.

As for the offense it was another one of those days where they were dominated by a no-name pitcher. In 6.1 innings pitched Matt Palmer held the Yankees to a run on three hits, walked two and struck out two. The only Yankees run off Palmer came in the first on an RBI single by Hideki Matsui.

Like Sabathia, Mark Teixeira has run out of excuses and it's time to start hitting. I do like that he still has good at-bats and draws a ton of walks, but he needs to stop trying to hit everything a mile and just look to hit the ball up the middle or the other way. A prime example came from the sixth inning of today's game. With Jeter at third and one out today in a 1-1 game he failed to get the run in when he flied out weakly to shallow centerfield. Who knows how the game plays out if the Yankees can get the lead back in that spot. Teixeira is now hitting .182 and the boo-birds are starting to make themselves heard.

With the score 8-1 the Yanks were able to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Fernando Rodriguez to cut it to 8-4, but that was all they would get today. Hey, if the bullpen actually did their job the Yankees might have been able to come back and win this one too.

Robinson Cano had his 18-game hitting streak snapped.

If you had told me on Thursday that the Yanks would take two out of the first three from the Angels I would have taken that in a heartbeat, so based solely on that I'm not too upset. It's just very annoying when you take the first two and the ace of the staff can't get the job done in game three. The Yankees can still take three out of four with a good start from Phil Hughes tomorrow. Problem is the Angels are starting Joe Saunders and he's been one of their best pitchers so far.

Damon Hopes To Come Back To The Bronx in 2010

"I know where I want to be next year," Damon told 1050 ESPN New York. "I want to be here in New York. I also know New York has a lot of young outfielders coming back. Austin Jackson is in the wings. At least, in this situation, I know my chances of coming back could be slim because of the young talent the Yankees do have."

Damon entered Friday night's game with the Angels, hitting .295 with four homers and 10 RBIs. He has picked up those numbers batting second in the Yankees' order.

When the Yankees signed Damon in 2005, they envisioned him as a center fielder and leadoff hitter. Damon -- who at one point as a Yankee considered retirement -- said this situation is different than what he faced in his final year with the Red Sox.

"I just go out and play," Damon said. "What happened before, I think, everybody in the world thought I was going to re-sign with Boston. Everyone thought I was going back. Here, people don't really know. Everyone is pretty much thinking this could be my last year here so I think that is a difference. I went out as a free agent in Boston and had a great year and I priced myself out of there market, at the time. Hopefully, I can go out and have a good year and they can see how important I am with the other players with doing the recruiting and doing whatever this team needs me to do. I've enjoyed playing here."

He is savoring this season and hoping he can change the Yankees' mind, though, he doesn't sound totally optimistic.

"If I go out and play the game well and play the game right, there obviously will be some interest," Damon said. "But I understand the business of this. I've been a free agent twice already."

If you had asked me before the season started what I felt about the possibility of resigning Damon I would have said that I could understand it if they signed him to a short-term deal. He's been good offensively, and last year he played a good left field. However, things have changed. While he's still solid offensively, he has turned into a disaster in left field. His arm is somehow worse than it was in the past, and his range seems to be a lot worse than it was last year.

At this point I think the Yankees should consider themselves lucky they got four pretty good years out of the guy and send him on his way. I'd rather they went into next season with a combination of Brett Gardner, Melky Cabrera, Nick Swisher and Austin Jackson. Adios Johnny.

News & Notes

- CC Sabathia has made 12 career starts against the Angels, and he's 5-5, with a 4.48 ERA. He did not face them last season.

- Angels' starter Matt Palmer is a 30-year-old rookie and is making his second start of the season. He spent a little time with the San Francisco Giants last year, and had an 8.53 ERA in three games.

- Robinson Cano has an 18-game hitting streak going, which ties his career high, and has hit safely in 22 of the 23 games this year. It's also worth noting that he ended last season on an 11-game hitting streak. Whatever Kevin Long did, seems to be working.

- During the Yankees current four-game winning streak they are hitting .486 with RISP. In the previous four games - all losses - they only hit .156 with RISP.

- Brian Cashman told the media today that Chien-Ming Wang will throw 50 pitches in an extended spring training game today.

A-Rod's Might Not Ba Back Soon As We Thought

Alex Rodriguez wants to get back in the Yankees lineup ahead of the May 15 schedule laid out for him. If Friday was anything to judge by, that's going to be a tall order.

Rodriguez continued on his road back from March 9 hip surgery by playing in an extended spring training game between Yankees and Pirates farmhands here at Pittsburgh's minor league complex. He took seven at-bats, did not play the field and barely ran the bases. That meant no full-speed running, no hard turns and no sliding - all things A-Rod says he must do before he returns.

"I felt good," he said after hitting a single in his final at-bat to finish 1-for-6 with a walk. "I'm looking forward to playing on the field."

To make it back for the Baltimore series that begins Friday, he has only a few days to do a lot. Joe Girardi said that Rodriguez could play a few innings in the field today "if he feels up to it" during an extended spring training game.

The next series begins May 12 in Toronto and the club would have to weigh the pros and cons of playing him on an artificial surface.

"I'm not going to give a date because I don't want to put any pressure on him," Girardi said. "I've stuck to that, but I've also said recently it's possible we're going to get him sooner than May 15."

Girardi agrees that A-Rod is going to have to prove himself running the bases, but added, "Let's not rush him. He'll let us know when he's ready." On Thursday, Rodriguez sounded apprehensive about sliding.

While there's no doubt that the Yankees need A-Rod back eventually, Girardi is right, they don't need to rush him back. Even if that means an extra two weeks without him, the smart move is to play it safe. Besides all the risks in rushing an injured player back before they're fully healed, the truth is, production from the third baseman and the offense in general is not a problem right now. The only reason the Yankees aren't eight games over .500 right now is because they haven't gotten enough pitching.

For now I have no problems with seeing the Yanks start Ramiro Pena every day for the next two or three weeks and then bring back a fully-healed A-Rod. Pena is showing a lot more at the plate than anyone ever expected and his glove has been as good as advertised (besides that one ball he should have caught yesterday).

Yanks Rally To Beat Angels 10-9

During the on-field post game interview with Kim Jones, Jorge Posada said that this Yankees team has a lot of life in it, and that's pretty much all you need to know about tonight's win.

The Yankees jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a four-run first. Hideki Matsui drove in the first run with a sac-fly. Robinson Cano followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Jorge Posada then stepped up and extended the Yanks lead to four with a two-run homer.

Yankees starter Andy Pettitte was very effective, and held that lead until there were two out in the sixth, that's when things went south. Quickly. With runners on second and third and two out Jeff Mathis hit a two-run single and the Yankees lead was cut in half. After loading the bases Pettitte was taken out of the game. His final line was very unimpressive; 5.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K. It was one of those weird starts where everything is going right and then boom, all hell breaks loose.

Mark Melancon came in for the Yanks and on the first pitch he threw Gary Matthews Jr. lined a three-run triple into the right-center field gap, and the Angels led 5-4. He then threw a wild pitch allowing Matthews to score to make it 6-4. He would then walk Bobby Abreu before getting out of the inning by getting Torii Hunter to line out. It was not a nice Bronx debut for the rookie.

Jose Veras pitched the seventh and was awful. He walked the first hitter he faced and it just got worse from there. Three runs later the Angels led 9-4 and this game looked like it was destined for the loss column.

But that's not how things would work out, because like Posada said, this team has a lot of life in it and they fought back. With one out in the eighth Cano doubled, Posada walked, and Brett Gardner singled to load the bases. Melky Cabrera was up and he lined an RBI single to cut the Angels' lead to 9-5. Ramiro Pena was next and he also singled, driving in two. The Angels lead was now cut to 9-7. They would get one run closer in the inning when Derek Jeter drove in a run with an RBI groundout.

With the score still 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth Angels newly acquired closer and former Rockie Brian Fuentes came into the game. Mark Teixeira led off the inning with a walk - He may not be able to buy a hit, but at least the guy draws his walks. Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano both singled and the Yankees had the bases loaded and nobody out. And that brings up back to Jorge Posada. He worked the count to 3-2 and then lined a Fuentes fastball into left field for a game winning two-run single. Down five with five outs to go? It was easily the Yankees best win of the season.

Nick Swisher was hit on the right elbow by Angels' starter Jered Weaver in the first inning and eventually had to leave the game. He had X-rays taken and they came back negative. He has a bruised elbow and is listed as day-to-day.

I was at the game and it was my first full game in the upper deck. I couldn't really get a feel for it on opening day because the Yankees were getting killed and I spent a lot of time walking around. If you really loved the feeling of sitting on top of the field like it felt in the old stadium's upper deck you may be in for a bit of a disappointment. You are noticeably further back at the new place, but at the same time you have do a great view of the entire field.

One thing that really surprised me was the volume of the crowd. Thanks to the overhang all of the noise made is amplified, so it sounds a lot better than I thought it would. The fans were also very good and into the game.

In the end I was happy with my upper deck experience. It's not the old place - nothing will be the old place - but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Here's some pictures from the game that I posted on the my Facebook page so you can get an idea for yourself.
