Yankees In Pursuit of Mike Cameron

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting:

The Yankees are showing serious interest in Cameron, major-league sources say, figuring that they could trade center fielder Melky Cabrera even if they do not send him to the Twins for left-hander Johan Santana.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is a supporter of Cameron's; the two were teammates with the Mariners in 2000. Cameron also has recent experience playing in New York; he was with the Mets in '04 and '05.

Cabrera, 23, is part of the Yankees' offer for Santana, but could fit for several teams that are in the market for a young, affordable, switch-hitting center fielder.

Those teams include the Cubs, Reds, Braves, Royals and Pirates. The Yankees likely would seek prospects for Cabrera, replace him with Cameron in center and keep Johnny Damon in left.

First of all why would the Yankees want Mike Cameron, because A-Rod said so? No thanks! Earlier today is was Jason Lane, and now it's Mike Cameron, when did the Yankees fall in love with 30+ year old outfielders who hit .250? Cameron is also going to be suspended for the first 25 games of the 2008 season after he tested positive a second time for a banned stimulant.

Secondly, why would the Yankees want to trade a 23 year old, switch-hitting center fielder for prospects? He's 23 years old! I could understand trading him in a package for Johan Santana, but not for prospects. That's ridiculous. Melky will probably hit .285 next season and he'll only be 24. He's most likely going to be better than any prospects the Yankees can get for him, and he's will be better than Mike Cameron.

Ok I agree that melky is still a young guy. But looking beyond his great arm he really doesn't have much else going for him. He is slightly better than league average hitter however hes prone to long slumps and he often misreads the ball causing him to have to cover more ground unnecessarily. There are better CF out there perhaps even someone we currently have in our system now. But your right Cammeron or Lane are not those guys.
