From SI.com:
Based on his time with the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez is one of the game's best shortstops, according to researchers led by Shane T. Jensen of the University of Pennsylvania. Rodriguez now plays third base for the New York Yankees.Using a complex statistical method, researchers concluded that one of the worst at shortstop is A-Rod's teammate, three-time Gold Glove-winner Derek Jeter. The findings were presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
That method involved looking at every ball put in play in major league baseball from 2002 through 2005 and recorded where the shots went. Researchers then developed a probability model for the average fielder in each position and compared that with the performance of individual players to see who was better or worse than average.
Comparing Jeter and A-Rod, Jensen said, "suggests the Yankees have one of the best defensive shortstops playing out of position in deference to one of the worst defensive shortstops." A-Rod won two Gold Gloves as a shortstop before he came New York in 2004.
What is this now, six or seven individuals/groups that have concluded that Jeter isn't a very good SS? Oh well, most Yankee fans will never buy it. I on the other hand, do buy it. I've seen way too many slow rollers get past him up the middle to believe he's as good as most Yankee fans think. He does make some spectacular plays, especially the "The Jeter," where he ranges to his right and makes that jump-throw, but that still doesn't mean he's a great short stop. The top three, and the worst, fielders (some of whom are no longer playing), based on the SAFE rankings, were:
• First base: Best, Ken Harvey, formerly with Kansas City; Doug Mientkiewicz, now with Pittsburgh; Eric Karros, formerly with the A's and Dodgers; worst, Fred McGriff, formerly with Tampa Bay.
• Second base: Best, Craig Counsell of the Brewers; Brandon Phillips of the Reds; Chase Utley of the Phillies; worst, Enrique Wilson, who last played with the Cubs.
• Third base: Best, Damian Rolls, formerly with Tampa; Counsell; Placido Polanco of the Tigers; Worst, Travis Fryman, formerly with the Indians and Tigers.
• Shortstop: Best, Clint Barmes of the Rockies; [Alex] Rodriguez; Jason Bartlett, traded from Minnesota to Tampa Bay in the offseason; worst, [Derek] Jeter.
• Left field: Best, Crisp; Reed Johnson of the Blue Jays; Carl Crawford of Tampa Bay; worst, [Bobby] Higginson.
• Center field: Best, Michaels; Andruw Jones, now with the Dodgers; Darin Erstad, now with the Astros; Worst, [Bernie] Williams.
• Right field: Best, Matthews; Trot Nixon, who played with the Indians last year; Dustan Mohr, who last played for Tampa Bay; Worst, [Wily] Mo Pena.

Agreed...but it's what you do in the playoffs, not the regular season that makes fans (especially the horrible fans in new york) remember how great you are. One awesome showing in the playoffs and world series will set you for life, no matter how terrible you are.
Keep in mind that this "story" came from Boston. Ask the same people if they had a change to trade Jeter for any other player in baseball who would they take?
That's what I thought.
