Done Deal - Santana, Mets have a deal.

ESPN and WFAN are reporting that the deal is done, and Santana is scheduled to take a physical. Probably tomorrow.

Jon Heyman has the details of the contract:

The Mets and superstar pitcher Johan Santana have agreed on a record multiyear contract for a pitcher, believed to be for $150.75 million in total according to sources, to complete his blockbuster trade to New York. The deal is still pending a physical, which has been scheduled for Saturday.

According to people familiar with the negotiations, the deal will pay the two-time Cy Young Award winner $137.5 for six years in new money on top of the $13.25 million he was due in 2008, meaning the Mets have guaranteed Santana $150.75 million over seven years.

UPDATE 1/2 @ 4:40 PM - Santana passed his physical and is now officially a New York Met.

I know the Mets HAD to sign him, but that's a lot of money and a lot of years to give any pitcher.

I'm glad Cashman stayed away from this deal.

The Mets did the right thing and stole Santana - giving up 4 unproven players for the best pitcher in baseball is a major coup. This now makes the Mets a very dangerous team, not only for the long season but also in a short series...should they make the playoffs. This is what has hurt the Yankess. We do not have a dominant pitcher that can strike out 10 guys and dominate a game. We keep trying to sign this kind of pitcher but we keep doing it when it is too late A.K.A Johnson and Clemens. If the Yanks could have gotten Santana for anything less than Hughes, Kennedy, and Cabrera they blew it. Once again, we will be built for the long season but will be vulnerable in a short series. Good pitching shuts down good hitting. If you are going to invest money in a player you might as well invest it in the best pitcher in baseball.

I agree that the Mets made a smart move here, the money was excessive, but they had to do it.

But I also feel the Yankees have two guys who could become that dominant starter, Joba and Hughes. I know there are no guarantees with young pitchers, but if either of these two reach their potential we will have that kind of pitcher.

The money was not that excessive when compared to what is being spent on mediocre talent. This is the best pitcher in baseball....better than Clemens, age 45, who we paid $25 million for a half year. Santana is in his prime, even more so when you consider that lefty pitchers seem to mature later then righty pitchers. To give up young unproven talent for a player that is at the end of their career is one thing but to give up young unproven talent for a proven dominant pitcher in his prime is a slam dunk. I can only hope that Joba and Hughes grow quickly - the Yanks are built to win now.

The money the Yankees gave Clemens was stupid, nobody can deny that. Same can be said for the contract that Zito got, as well as many of the contracts handed out to pitchers over the last few years. Santana is good enough where the money he got is acceptable. If I was a Met fan, I'd be ecstatic right now. They stole Johan from the Twins.

Yankee fans cannot be impatient with the kids. I think they have a chance to win now, but it's going to be very tough.
