4/7 Minor League Game Report

(
We have a new feature here at Sliding Into Home. Big Guy who contributes his Minor League reports, will not be contributing his SWB Yankees Game reports. I will add the scores of the other Yankees affiliates.)

The AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yanks suffered their first defeat after starting off 4-0 by dropping a 9-2 decision to the Louisville Bats (Reds). The story of this game was the starting pitchers for both teams. Jeff Marquez made his AAA debut for SWB and Justin Lehr flirted with a perfect game into the 8th inning.

PITCHING: Jeff Marquez
led the Yankee minor leagues with 15 wins last season at AA Trenton but he was roughed up in his AAA debut. Marquez got off to a terrible start allowing 6 runs in the 1st inning. 2 runs scored on a leadoff walk, broken bat single, and 2-runtriple by phenom Jay Bruce. Former Yankee Andy Phillips reached on a groundout to 3rd baseman Cody Ransom who threw Bruce out at the plate. 2 singles loaded the bases and Marquez then gave up a bases-loaded walk and 2 singles for 4 more runs for a total of 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks in the 1st inning. Another run scored in the 2nd inning on a single, double and RBI sac fly giving Louisville a 7-0 lead. In the 4th, Jay Bruce hit a solo homer to make the score 8-0 after 4 innings. Marquez left a lot of pitches up in the strike zone and Louisville took advantage. Marquez line: 4.0 IP, 8 runs, 10 hits, 1 K, 2 BB.

The bullpen took over the rest of the way and continued to pitch very well, allowing 1 run over the final 5 innings. Dan Giese pitched scoreless 5th & 6th innings. He gave up 1 run in the 7th... Heath Phillips finished off with scoreless 8th & 9th innings.

OFFENSE: Justin Lehr
was outstanding, flirting with a perfect game until 1 out in the 8th inning. Jason Lane hit a solo homer and broke up everything. It was Lane's 3rd homer in the first 5 games. SWB picked up another run in the 9th on a Chad Moeller double and RBI infield hit by Justin Christian.

NOTES: Jonathan Albadejo
was added to the roster. Scott Strickland was placed on the Staten Island roster in a paper transaction. ...Cody Ransom had 5 strikeouts in the last 2 games. Kei Igawa faces Homer Bailey Tuesday. Steven White goes Wed, with Alan Horne pitching on Thursday.
