Ian Kennedy started for the Yanks and was good. In 6+ innings of work Kennedy allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4. Kennedy was throwing strikes (64 out of 90 pitches were strikes), was usually ahead in the count, and pitched much better than his line looks. One of the runs scored on a ball that Johnny Damon should have caught, but allowed it to drop in for a ground rule RBI double. The third run came after he had left the game, when Billy Traber gave up a 2-run homer to Carl Crawford.
Kennedy left the game in the bottom of the 7th after he was hit on the hip with a line drive. He probably would have left the game anyway, and I don't think the injury was anything serious; he'll probably just have a nice bruise in the morning.
As I mentioned already Billy Traber did not have a good outing, he faced three batters, Akinori Iwamura lined out, Carl Crawford as I said, hit a 2-run homer, and then Traber hit Carlos Pena.
Brian Bruney was next out of the pen and was even worse than Traber. He entered the game with the Yankees leading 7-4, and immediately gave up a 2-run bomb to B.J. Upton, the next batter was Evan Longoria and he also homered, tying the game at 7. After that Bruney seemed to settle down and retired the next four batters he faced. Although he did give up a long fly ball to Jason Bartlett that miss being a game tying HR by about 10 feet.
Mariano Rivera came in to the game with two outs in the 8th and retired all four batters he faced, two on strike outs, to record his fourth save on the season.

RAYS PITCHING
Johnny Damon, Alex Rodriguez and Morgan Ensberg all hit solo HRs in the first to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead before Kennedy threw a pitch.
The Yanks added four more runs in the 4th, Melky Cabrera hit a one out single, recently called up Chad Moeller was then up, and with Cabrera running Moeller spoiled a pitch out, slapping it through the vacated hole between 1st and 2nd for a single. Then with runners on the corners, Damon hit a 2-run double, Derek Jeter was next up and he lined a 2-run single over short stop to give the Yankees a 7-1 lead. All seven runs came off Rays' starter Andy Sonnanstine who only lasted 3.1 innings.
After the bullpen squandered the lead in the 7th, Robinson Cano hit a pinch-hit solo HR in the 8th off Rays' reliever Al Reyes to give the Yankees an 8-7 lead.
The 8 runs and 15 hits were both season highs for the Yankees offense.
