The Yankees fell to 12-11 on the year with a 7-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Phil Hughes got the start and was good in his two innings of work, but was forced to leave the game after a rain delay. In 2 innings Hughes allowed just 1 hit, he also struck out one. He was throwing his fastball for strikes, and his curveball had very good movement.
Then it was the bullpens turn, and you know it was a bad night when Kyle Farnsworth was the only guy to get the job done. Ross Ohlendorf came in to replace Hughes and got pounded. After pitching a scoreless 3rd inning, Ohlendorf allowed 5 runs on 5 hits in the 4th, to turn a 3-0 Yankee lead into a 5-3 deficit. It seemed like every pitch Ohlendorf threw was up in the zone, and the White Sox hitters made him pay every time.
Latroy Hawkins came in and was OK in his 2 innings of work, but allowed a big solo HR to Jim Thome to push the White Sox lead to 6-3. Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless 7th, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Farnsworth injured his elbow on the last pitch of the 7th when he slipped on the mound. He doesn’t think it is too serious but they’ll know more tomorrow.
Joba Chamberlain came in to pitch the 8th and dominated striking out two of the three batters he faced in the inning. But things were not as easy for him in the 9th, after allowing a double to Carlos Quentin, Joe Crede lined a game-winning RBI single into left-center. The loss was the first in Joba's young career.
WHITE SOX PITCHING
The Yanks scored their first three runs in the 3rd; Jason Giambi led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Melky Cabrera then walked, and then following an fly out by Jose Molina, Johnny Damon walked loading the bases for Derek Jeter. Jeter hit a sac fly to score the Yanks first run, and Bobby Abreu smacked a 2-run double to make it 3-0.
They added 2 more runs in the 6th on a 2-run homer by Melky Cabrera, his fourth homer of the year tying Alex Rodriguez for the team lead. The HR cut the Sox lead to 6-5.
The Yanks were able to tie the game in the next inning with a mini two-out rally. Abreu singles, Matsui walked, and then Morgan Ensberg singled up to the middle to drive in Abreu.
Robinson Cano is still not hitting, he went 0-for-3 and his avg. (.159) is now lower than Jason Giambi's (.161) who had two hits on the night.
