Yanks Smack White Sox 9-5

The Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-5 tonight at US Cellular Field. The win improved the Yankees record to 11-10.

Chien-Ming Wang got the start and didn't have his best stuff. In 6 innings Wang allowed 3 runs on 10 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 5. Wang allowed the first 2 runs in the second on three straight hits capped off by a 2-run double by Juan Uribe. The third White Sox off Wang came in the 5th on an RBI double from Paul Konerko. Wang was leaving his pitches up and allowed far too many hard hit fly balls, several of which would have been HR at other ballparks, but give Wang a lot of credit, he battled tonight and was able to do enough to put the Yankees in a position to win.

With the win tonight Chien-Ming Wang now has 50 wins. It was also the 85th start of his career. This is the quickest a pitcher has reached 50 wins since 1986, when Dwight Gooden won his 50th in his 82nd start.

Billy Traber came in a faced one batter (Jim Thome) and walked him. Brian Bruney then came in and walked Paul Konerko, struck out Jermaine Dye, and then allowed an infield single to A.J. Pierzynski to load the bases, and that was it for Bruney.

Joba Chamberlain came into the game with bases loaded and 1 out in the 7th with the score 6-3 Yankees. He struck out Carlos Quentin, walked Joe Crede to cut the Yanks lead to 6-4, and then got Juan Uribe to pop out to end the inning. He then pitched a scoreless 8th. In 1.2 IP he allowed no runs on 1 hit and 1 BB, along with 1 strikeout.

Kyle Farnsworth came in for the 9th allowed a 1 out solo HR to A.J. Pierzynski to cut the Yankees lead to 9-5, and then walked Carlos Quentin, but was able to retire the next two batters he faced to finish off the game.

WHITE SOX PITCHING

Johnny Damon led off the game with a double, and later scored the first Yankee run on a RBI ground out by Hideki Matsui. Jason Giambi added a 2nd run with an opposite field solo-HR in the 2nd inning. It was an impressive piece of hitting for someone struggling as badly as he is.

The Yankees were then held in check until the 7th; with one out Morgan Ensberg walked, and Melky Cabrera singled to knock White Sox starter Jose Contreras out of the game. Boone Logan came in for the Sox and allowed a infield single by Damon to load the bases. Former Yankee Octavio Dotel then came in and struck out Derek Jeter for the second out. But then Bobby Abreu came up, and on a 2-0 pitch smashed an opposite field grand slam to give the Yankees a 6-3 lead.

The Yankees added 3 more runs on a 3-run homer by Johnny Damon in the top of the 8th. Damon's third hit on the night.

Thanks for the game wrap up. I was working tonight and missed the game and this was better than having to watch the entire encore.

Big win for the boys tonight.

Happy to hear the summary was useful.

Very good win tonight, now tomorrow's another story with Moose on the mound. Let's hope he can pitch a good game.

Moose is excited he doesnt have to see anyone named Ramirez tomorrow..

Unless its Edwar coming in in the 7th with a one run lead..

Then I am too.

Greg Cohen said...

True, without Manny Moose would have an ERA around 3.00.

We can also look back to his game against the Rays: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB 3 K, which wasn't too shabby. And he was also good against the Sox in Fenway, but then Girardi decided to screw him with a bad managerial decision.

Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here, but I still think he can be effective.

Yahoo had this on Becketts bio page

Apr 17 RHP Josh Beckett is 38-19 during two-plus seasons with the Red Sox, and currently ranks fifth all-time in winning percentage (.667) among pitchers with at least 50 decisions. Beckett moved ahead of former LHP Babe Ruth, and stands mere percentage points behind Smokey Joe Wood (116-56, a career winning percentage of .674).

With Wangs 50th victory last night, he stands at .735

Id say worthy of noting, resources show thats gotta be top 3.

On the Yanks I mean... Pettittes probably far up that list too.

Greg Cohen said...

Wang's winning percentage is outstanding. Pettitte is 167 - 88 as a Yankees so he has a .655 W%.

Woo Hoo, Damon's avg is up to .243!

Rough outing for Wang, lucky he was playing where he was or a few of those many balls caught on the warning track would have been in the stands.

Still, he showed excellent composure and got the win. Rough night for the bullpen, and Farnsworth in the closer spot? Are you serious? OK, so they had a five run lead, but still...dicey move.

JMiller,

It's better than .183.

Jeff,

Yea Wang really did grind out that win last night. I'm impressed he's 2-0 on the road so far.

Farnsworth always makes things interesting doesn't he? I can't believe they had to get Mo up in a 9-5 game.
