PITCHING: Jeff Karstens made his 2nd start of the year since coming off the DL last week. He took the loss (0-2). Karstens gave up 6 runs in 3.2 innings on 7 hits. He had 6 strikeouts and 3 walks. Karstens got pounded for a 2-run homer and a solo homer both by Jeff Bailey. Karstens left losing 6-4.

Billy Traber relieved Karstens and was rocked for 3 runs in 1.1 innings on a 2-run homer and a solo homer. That made the score 9-4 Pawtucket. ... Steven White didn't fare any better than Karstens or Traber. He went 1.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 solo homers and left with the score 11-4 Pawtucket. ... J.B. Cox relieved White in the 7th and got the final out. Cox pitched a perfect 8th inning. Cox has not given up a run in 5 games since being promoted from AA Trenton. In 6.2 innings he's only allowed 2 hits, one was of the infield variety.

OFFENSE: SWB broke out to a 1-0 lead off knuckleballer Charlie Zink in the 1st inning. Brett Gardner reached on a passed ball on strike 3. Justin Christian was hit by a pitch, Jason Lane walked to load the bases. Eric Duncan had the rbi sac fly to give SWB a 1-0 lead. ... SWB scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Justin Christian doubled, Jason Lane had a rbi double. Cody Ransom singled, and Nick Green had a 2-rbi single. That gave SWB a short-lived 4-2 lead. ... The Yanks didn't score again until the 9th inning when they picked up 1 run on doubles by Chris Stewart and Bernie Castro, for a final score of 11-5 Pawtucket.

NOTES: Theo Epstein was at the game and must have enjoyed the 6 homer barrage and move into a 1st place tie. ... Dan Giese goes against Kyle Snyder Tuesday night at Pawtucket in the 2nd game of the 4-game series.
