5/4 Minor League Report

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees defeated the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) 9-5 to complete a 4 game sweep. The win gives SWB a 7-1 record on the already finished season series with Durham. SWB's 1st place record is now at 22-9 on the season.

PITCHING: Kei Igawa got the start and picked up the win (3-3). He struggled in the first inning falling behind hitters and getting pitches up in the strikezone. Durham took a 2 run lead in the 1st on a walk and 2 doubles. Igawa settled down until the 6th allowing a double and 2 singles. In the 6th 2 more runs scored on a walk and 2-run homer that tied the score at 4-4. Igawa's line: 7 IP, 4 runs, 5 hits, 8 K's, and 2 walks. His era is now at 3.86. Igawa got only 2 groundouts and 11 flyouts. 108 pitches, 66 for strikes. Igawa left the game leading 9-4.

Scott Strickland pitched a scoreless 8th inning allowing 2 singles. In the 9th he gave up 1 run on a walk and 2 singles making the score 9-5.

OFFENSE: The Yanks were powered by a Jason Lane grand slam and Cody Ransom 2-run homer. ... SWB took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 1st when Wilson Betemit doubled, Brett Gardner infield hit, Jason Lane RBI sac fly. Cody Ransom followed with his 2-run homer (5). ... In the 3rd they scored 1 run when Lane reached on a force out and moved to 2nd on an error. Eric Duncan got the RBI on a single making the score 4-2. ... In the 7th SWB blew the game open picking up 5 runs. The 1st run scored on a single by Justin Christian and walks to Greg Porter, Betemit and Gardner. Lane followed with his grand slam. It was Lane's 7th homer of the year making the score 9-4 at the time.

NOTES: Before this game lefties were hitting .282 against Igawa with righties at a .205 pace. ... Wilson Betemit started at 1st base and had a double and 2 walks. ... Dan Giese starts Monday with Ian Kennedy the probable for Tuesday against Charlotte. ... Durham lead the league in striking out, 8.5 per game. ... SWB is 17-2 when out hitting the opponent. ... Former Yankee Kevin Thompson was leading the International League in hitting before today's action with a .351 average.
