The Yankees lost a tough one tonight to the Cleveland Indians 5-3. The loss drops the Yankees to 17-17 on the year, and 4.5 games behind first place Boston, who doesn't seem to lose anymore.
Andy Pettitte started for the Yanks and pitched very well. In 6.1 IP he allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk, and he also struck out a season high 6 Indians. The one mistake he made on the night was when he gave up a 2-run homer to Jhonny Peralta in the 4th.
Kyle Farnsworth replaced Andy in the 7th with a runner on a 1 out and retired the only two batters he faced, one on a strike out.
Then Joba Chamberlain came in to pitch the 8th and was in trouble from the start. He walked Grady Sizemore to leadoff the inning, my biggest problem with this at bat was that he kept shaking Jose Molina off, and it hurt him. Joba has to learn to trust his catcher sometimes. and hopefully after tonight he will. Jamey Carroll then laid down a successful sac bunt, and Joba walked Jhonny Peralta to put men on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. He was able to get Ryan Garko to fly out to right for the second out, but then things really got ugly. The next batter was pinch-hitter David Dellucci, and on a 0-1 pitch, smashed a 96 MPH fastball over the short-porch for a 3-run homer to give the Indians a 5-3 lead. Joba then struck out Travis Hafner to end the inning, but it was too late as the damage had already been done.
Jose Veras then came in and looked very good pitching a 1-2-3 9th, with 1 strikeout.

INDIANS PITCHING
The Yankees loaded the bases in the 1st inning with 1 out, but were only able to score 1 run which came in when Jason Giambi grounded into an RBI force out.
With the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the 4th, Hideki Matsui (who was 3-for-3 on the day) led off with a walk, Giambi then drove him in with a double off the wall in left to tie the game. Melky Cabrera was then up and moved Giambi over to 3rd on a ground out, and then Robinson Cano drove in Giambi with an RBI single to left to give the Yanks a 3-2 lead. The Yankees had a chance to blow the game open, but Johnny Damon was robbed on a great play in center by Grady Sizemore to end the inning.

Yankees had a ton of opportunities to ice the game earlier. Can't blame Joba. And what was Abreu doing getting caught trying to go first to third? That was a huge rally-killer.
Still, nice to see the team starting to click.
Despite the loss, there were a lot of positives last night. Other than Joba, Yankee pitching was very good. Pettitte was rock solid, Farns looked in command of his fastball and Veras made a strong case to be kept on the roster.
I'm only blaming Joba for not trusting his catcher. And I don't mind seeing Abreu going from 1st to 3rd there. The replay showed the ump blew the call too.
Jeff, yea you're right about Farnsworth and Veras. But you gotta win these types of games.
When is the last time a team in MLB has 4 sub .200 hitters in the same lineup? Molina could very well get there, ack. We sure don't here much about the year Matsui is putting together though, it would be awesome to see him keep it up! Go Yanks!
Well hopefully Giambi and Cano can raise their averages soon. Then we won't have to worry about the sub-.200 club.
Matsui has been great, he deserves a a ton of credit, especially since he's coming off that knee injury.
