The Yanks defeated the Mariners today buy a score of 6-1. Mike Mussina started and was very good for the third start in a row. He allowed just 1 run while scattering 7 hits, he didn't walk a batter and struck out 5. Whenever he got into trouble he seemed to be able to get a big strike out or a double play ball to get out of it. Mussina's ERA is now 4.23, and I don't think I'm alone when I say I'm pleasantly surprised by his performance so far this year. The only run came on an RBI single by Ichiro in the 3rd.

Latroy Hawkins, Edwar Ramirez, and Jose Veras pitched one scoreless inning each to close out the win for the Yanks. Ramirez got into a little trouble because he walked two batters, but got out of it with no damage done.

MARINERS PITCHING

For the fourth game in a row the Yankees jumped out to a first inning lead, Johnny Damon led off with a double, Derek Jeter moved him over to third with a ground out to second, and then Bobby Abreu knocked Damon in with a line drive single to center.

The Yanks added three more runs in the 3rd. Again Damon started the rally off by hitting a 1-out double, and Jeter followed with a double of his own to drive in Damon. Hideki Matsui then smacked an RBI single and moved to second on an E7. Jason Giambi then walked, and Melky Cabrera capped off the rally with a RBI single of his own.

The Yankees final 2 runs came in the 6th on a 2-run homer by Damon.

Batters 1-4 of the Yankees lineup went 10-for-19 today with 5 RBI and 5 runs scored. Another key to today's offense was timely hitting, they finally were able to get a good number of hits with runners in scoring position.

Great game. Not quite sure why Girardi left Ramirez in so long during the 7th after getting into all that trouble. Glad it all worked out though.

I think he was just trying to test him. Hopefully Edwar gained some confidence from it. I don't mind it in a 6-1 game, if the game was closer it would have been a stupid move regardless of the outcome.
