The Yankees once again cannot stay over .500 for more than one day as they fell to the Oakland A's 8-4 last night at McAfee Coliseum.

Darrell Rasner had his first very bad start of the season. He allowed 7 runs, 6 earned on 9 hits in just 3.2 innings pitched, he also walked 1 and struck out 4. Ranser pitched two scoreless innings and had a 1-0 lead before everything fell apart in the 3rd. Jason Giambi's error to start the inning didn't help either.

After a very good May, Rasner has looked very average in June, with 1 very good start in between two not so good starts. For the month he's 0 and 3, with a 6.35 ERA.

Ross Ohlendorf relieved Rasner and was shaky once again in I guess what you could call a long relief role, though he only pitched an inning and a third. He allowed a run on 2 hits and 3 walks.

How about this for a miracle, Latroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth both pitch, and both pitched 1-2-3 innings. Amazing, isn't it?

Edwar Ramirez pitched a scoreless 8th.

Rasner (L, 3-4) 3.2 9 7 6 1 4 0 3.64

Ramirez 1.0 0 0 0 1 1 0 2.50

A'S PITCHING

The Yanks took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd on Jason Giambi's 15th HR of the season, but that was all they'd score until the top of the 9th.

They had a chance to add to their lead in the top of the 3rd when they had 1st and 3rd with 1 out and Alex Rodriguez and Bobby Abreu due up, but A's starter Justin Duchscherer struck both of them out, and the Yankees didn't score. Duchscherer pitched very well, allowing just a run on 5 hits in 7 innings of work.

In the 9th the Yanks loaded the bases with 1 out, and then Giambi grounded into a force out scoring one, and a second run came into score on a bad throw by Bobby Crosby trying to complete the double play. The Yanks added one more on a Jorge Posada RBI single.

A'S OFFENSE

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Justin Duchscherer (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K)

HONORABLE MENTION: Bobby Crosby (2-for-2, 2B, 3 RBI, R, 2 BB)

GOAT OF THE GAME: Darrell Rasner (3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 4 K)

It's very frustrating that this team can't stay over .500, but the most important thing right now is winning series, which is why tonight's rubber game is so important. And speaking of the rubber game of the series, Andy Pettitte will take the mound for what is not only an important start for the Yanks, but for Pettitte as well. Hopefully he can do better than his 10 ER on 10 H performance last weekend, and who knows, maybe he can even hold a lead, but that might be asking for too much. Joe Blanton starts for the A's, with the first pitch set for 10:05 p.m.. The game is on YES and WCBS 880.
