Tonight was one of those games you wish you didn't watch. It was an ugly game on all sides of the ball. The Yankees were pounded by the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-5 in the first game the Yankees have played in the Steel City since Bill Mazeroski's stupid home run.

Starting for the Yankees was right-hander Darrell Rasner, and he got shelled. In 5 innings Rasner allowed 7 runs on 10 hits, including homers off the bats of Ryan Doumit and Jose Bautista. Rasner was great in May, but so far in the month of June he had an ERA of 7.00, and better hope either Dan Giese or Sidney Ponson don't pitch well or he may be out of a job soon.

The bullpen was also awful tonight. With the score 7-3, and the game still within reach, Latroy Hawkins let the game get out of hand by allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 2.2 innings of work. Could this be the last straw for Hawkins? He currently has a 6.12 ERA, and with people like J.B. Cox and David Robertson dominating AAA you have to believe that Hawkins' days as a Yankees may be coming to an end.

Edwar Ramirez had a bad outing, allowing two doubles, and two inherited runners to score. His ERA is now up to 3.09.

Rasner (L, 4-5) 5.0 10 7 7 0 4 2 4.50

Ramirez 0.1 2 1 1 0 0 0 3.09

PIRATES PITCHING

Clutch hitting has been this team's problem all season, and it was certainly their problem tonight. Pirates' stater Tom Gorzelanny walked 5 and the Yankees had him on the ropes all night, but could not get the big hit. Same story, different day for this Yankees offense.

A few bright spots on the offensive end; Robinson Cano had three hits, Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to 12, and Justin Christian picked up his first major league hit, and also drove in two runs with a double.

PIRATES OFFENSE

HONORABLE MENTION: Adam LaRoche (3-for-5, 3B, 1 R, 2 RBI)

GOATS OF THE GAME: The Yankees pitchers - Rasner, Hawkins and Ramirez (8 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 0 BB, 4 K)

It's a big start for Joba Chamberlain tomorrow, as he looks to make tonight's debacle a distant memory for the Yankees and their fans. There are no "must wins" in June, but tomorrow is a pretty important game if you ask me. Joba will face off against left-hander Zach Duke who gets the start for the Pirates. First pitch: 7:05 - TV: YES - Radio: WCBS 880.
