With Derek Jeter on first and the scored tied at one in the 10th, Bobby Abreu smacked a double into the gap in right, Jeter scored from first, and the Yanks had a 2-1 victory. The double was Abreu's first walk-off hit as a Yankee.

The win was the team's fourth in a row, and they were also able to complete a two-game sweep of the first place Rays. The Yankees are now 49 - 42 and trail Tampa by 6.5 games in the AL East.

Sidney Ponson started for the Yankees, and while he always seemed to be in trouble, he pitched a very good game. In 6 innings he allowed one run on five hits, while walking two and striking out four. The run came on a solo homer off the bat of Carlos Pena in the 6th.

The duo of Jose Veras and Kyle Farnsworth was once again very good. Veras struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 7th, and The Farns pitched a perfect 8th.

Mariano Rivera pitched the final two innings and dominated. He didn't allow a hit and struck out four.

RAYS PITCHING

It was "Support the 'Stache" day at The Stadium today, and the first 20,000 fans received fake mustaches in honor of Jason Giambi's bid to make the All Star team. So it was only fitting that The Big G drove in the Yankees first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st. But they wouldn't score again until the 10th.

Rays' pitching was very good all day, but they did have their chances; two on with two out in the 3rd, a runner on 3rd with 2 out in the 5th, and a runner on 2nd with one out in the 7th, and a runner at 3rd with one out in the 9th, each time failing to the big hit. The offense is still not where it needs to be, but they won, and for today that's all that matters.
