If he had his druthers, Girardi would not have even had Molina catching Sunday, but Jorge Posada's throwing arm continues to be an issue and there is the growing likelihood Posada will be taking Hideki Matsui's place as designated hitter on a semi-regular basis. Either today or tomorrow, the Yankees will announce that Matsui is going to have season-ending knee surgery. No, this isn't exactly the team Girardi envisioned giving the Red Sox and the upstart Tampa Bay Rays the good chase through the dog days of August.(Pete Caldera wrote this today: "Hideki Matsui will be examined today to determine if season-ending left knee surgery is necessary. "The news so far has not been encouraging," Girardi said." So maybe Madden is wrong. We will see.)
Unless they acquire somebody, Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon (when he comes off the DL this week) can split the DH duties.

What happened to the guy who played 1700 straight games? He used to be so durable and now it seems like he's constantly hurt. I guess he's getting older, but the injury problems have been insane lately.
he's giving us the ol' pavano right up the ass. Comeback Carl is gonna be back soon and he's gonna make us eat our words.
Yeah the last few years have been pretty bad for Matsui injury-wise. Broken wrist in '06, right knee in '07, left knee in '08.
And Godriguez, who is this Carl Pavano fellow you speak of? I've never heard of him before.
haha i know what you mean. i'm calling it right now. Pavano comes back and goes 4-2 in 8 starts with an ERA under 3.50. 3-0 in the postseason winning ALCS MVP. No i'm not stoned. and no i'm not a pavano fan either, i just think it could happen.
There is no way you believe that could happen. If that happens I will name my first child Carl.
or carla. i think it is possible, but i wouldnt bet the farm on it.
on a lighter note i heard the METamucil season ticket holders got their relocation packages over the weekend. i hope i get the bad news soon too.
