Andy Pettitte had nothing tonight. He allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 2. He was not helped by his defense either. Derek Jeter made a costly throwing error in the first on a ball that should of ended the inning, instead the Sox came away with a 2-0 lead. The error was Jeter's team-leading 7th on the season, and things just got worse from there for Yankees and Pettitte.

Besides the useless Latroy Hawkins who allowed a run on 2 hits in the 8th, the bullpen did well tonight. Dan Giese pitched 2.1 hitless innings, including 3 strikeouts, in relief of Andy Pettitte, and David Robertson pitched a scoreless 9th.

RED SOX PITCHING

Jon Lester dominated the Yankees for a complete game shut out. He allowed 5 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 8. The Yanks banged into three doubleplays, including Derek Jeter team-leading 12th. A totally embarrassing effort from the Yankees offense tonight.

Melky Cabrera broke his 0-for-19 slump with two hits on the night, and Robinson Cano also had two hits.

RED SOX OFFENSE

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jon Lester (9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K)

HONORABLE MENTION: Coco Crisp (2-for-3, BB, SB, 2 R)

GOATS OF THE GAME: Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte

Yankees are now 5 games out of the Wild Card race, and 8 games behind the first place Rays in the division, and with the pitching match-up for tomorrow things could get worse very quickly.

Joe Girardi
held a heated team meeting following the game. According to Tyler Kepner, "Girardi challenged the team to play with more passion, adhere to his rules and eliminate mental mistakes, like missing signs." We will see what effect, if any, the meeting has on this team.

Game two of the series is tomorrow afternoon at The Stadium. Darrell Rasner makes the start for the Yankees, and will face the Red Sox ace Josh Beckett. First pitch: 1:05 p.m. - TV: YES - Radio: WCBS 880
