8/27 Minor League Report

SWB held on for a 3-2 win over Buffalo (Indians). Phil Hughes got the win (1--0) Mark Melancon picked up his 1st save of the year. Melancon gave up an infield hit and single in the 9th. The tying run was caught in a rundown trying to score after a groundball to Juan Miranda. Melancon got 2 strikeouts in the inning.

Phil Hughes came into this start struggling with an 8.74 ERA. Hughes had given up 16 runs in 18 innings, with opposing hitters at .329 batting average. Lefties were hitting .436, with righties batting only .206. He was coming off two bad starts against last place Lehigh Valley. Hughes bounced back with by far his best rehab start against Buffalo. His curveball was his biggest improvement. Most of his strikeouts came on curves. All Hughes 6 hits came by lefty batters.

1st Inning: Scoreless. Hughes got 2 quick outs. One on a strikeout (curve). Victor Martinez, rehabbing from Cleveland hit a line-drive double down the 1st base line. Hughes got Tony Graffanino to groundout to short to end the inning. 18 pitches---10 strikes.

2nd Inning: 1 run for Buffalo 1-0 lead on a single to right, stolen base, and RBI single. 1 strikeout (curve) 14 pitches--9 strikes in the inning.

3rd Inning: Hughes threw a perfect 3rd. Getting Josh Barfield to K on a curve, Victor Martinez lined out to left and a line out to right. 14 pitches-10 strikes. Thru 3 innings 46 pitches--29 strikes.

4th Inning: A scoreless 4th with 2 strikeouts on curves, and a bloop double to left. 14 pitches-10 strikes. Thru 4 innings: 60 pitches-39 strikes.

5th Inning: Hughes threw a perfect 5th inning on only 8 pitches (7 strikes). Getting his 5th strikeout. All his strikeouts on curves. 68 pitchs---46 strikes.

6th Inning: Another scoreless inning by Hughes. He allowed a single. All 5 hits to this point have been by lefty batters. 9 pitches-8 strikes. Thru 6 innings: 79 pitches--54 strikes.

7th Inning: Hughes gave up a leadoff triple, but got the next batter to strikeout on a fastball, before being relieved by Phil Coke came on and gave up a rbi sac fly. Run charged to Hughes. Hughes left leading 3-2.

Hughes Line: 6.1 IP, 1 run, 6 hits (all lefty batters), 7 K's--1 walk. He threw 87 pitches--61 strikes 6 groundouts---6 flyouts. The Buffalo announcers said Hughes topped out at 93 in the 1st inning, but never mentioned his velocity after that except for 1 hit that came on a 90 mph fastball.

OFFENSE: Ben Broussard put SWB out to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer (11) in the 4th inning. ... Nick Green hit a solo homer (11) in the 6th to make score SWB 2-1. ... SWB picked up the 3rd run in the 7th when Justin Christian singles and stole 2nd base. Melky Cabrera followed with a RBI single. He is now hitting .368 at AAA since being sent down.
