Damon: We've got a big hole to climb out of

Never short on words, Johnny Damon explains what the Yankees have in store for them if they expect to make it to October baseball.

From The Daily News:

"Our job going into (Tuesday night's) game was to try and get within (four) games of the Red Sox and get closer to Minnesota and Chicago. Now we're (six) back of the Red Sox. We're definitely digging ourselves a big trench to climb out of."

"It's extremely difficult," Damon said. "We know we need to play better down the stretch."

"We're looking to win both of them," Damon said. "That's what we need to do.

"We have to play better," Damon said. "We were hoping the last 32 games we'd have to play very well and win 22 games. Now we have 31 games left and have to win 22 still, maybe even 23. We have to be really good down the stretch."

"A bunch of these teams we're playing have given us problems this year," Damon said. "We've got five more with the Red Sox, six more with Toronto, three more with Baltimore and we have the White Sox and Angels and all those other teams. (Not to mention six more with the Rays). We know how important it is every day to try and get a win and unfortunately (Tuesday night) we couldn't get one. (The Red Sox) are not the only team we're trying to catch, but they're the team we need to catch if we see ourselves going to the postseason."

I wonder how much confidence he actually has in this team. It has to be frustrating when you're one of the only players who shows up for the biggest game of the year. Especially when the 30 million dollar man is leaving a small village on the bases, and "Big-Game Andy" is getting shelled.
