When I saw the pitching matchup for tonight's game - Carl Pavano vs. A.J. Burnett - I did not get a good feeling about this game. A.J. Burnett has owned the Yankees this season, and Carl Pavano is coming off Tommy John surgery. But Pavano was great, holding the Jays to just one run on three hits in six innings, and picked up his second win in as many starts. He only threw 72 pitches, and probably could have gone another inning, or two, but Joe Girardi decided to take him out. He then used five relievers to pitch the final three innings.
I would have let Carl Pavano pitch the 7th, but I understand that Girardi wanted to quit while he was ahead with Pavano. However his bullpen management after taking Pavano made the decision even worse. He should have let Brian Bruney face more than one batter, or how about saving Bruney and letting Pavano face one batter, and leave to a standing ovation? He eventually had to use Mariano for more than one inning for the second day in a row. It's not a big deal, but it was another case of Joe Girardi's over managing.
Mariano was spectacular tonight. He came into the game in the top of the 8th with runner on first and second and one out. He breezed through that jam, and retired the Jays in the 9th for his 32nd save of the year.
Bobby Abreu and Jason Giambi provided the offense for the Yanks in the 4th, Abreu with an RBI double, and Jason Giambi with a sac-fly.
Boston, Minnesota, and Tampa all won, so the Yanks were unable to gain any ground.
