Reader Poll: Can the Yanks survive without Joba?

As I'm sure you can all tell, I'm pretty upset with the idea of losing Joba for an extended period of time. I'm wondering how the rest of you fell, so please vote.

If you do feel they can survive, can you please leave a comment and let me know how? Make a believer out of me.

The poll is over on the left.

looks like we cant survive.

maybe if we score 10+ runs every time his rotation replacement pitched. we have the lineup, but we dont live up to expectations.

Well, as I've commeneted earlier, I think there's still plenty of chance to make the playoffs. Winning IN the playoffs, well, that's a different story.

But for now, there's no team taking the bull by the horns in the AL. Other than the Angels, there's no "lock" for a playoff spot in the entire rest of the AL. The Sox, Sox, Yankees, Twins, and Rays are, in my opinion, the 5 teams battling for 3 spots. Of those 5, to me, even a Joba-less Yankees have the offense and bullpen balance to beat out two of them, essentially.

The keys to making the playoffs:

1) First and foremost, the offense must be more consistant. They've struggled to do it all season, but I believe they are capable. I think the additions of Nady and Pudge will go a long way to creating the depth of lineup that can haunt opposing pitchers, and if Cano's hand is ok and he starts hitting again, and the Stache-free Giambi gets a new surge of life, this offense will have no problem powering the Yankees into the playoffs.

2) The starting rotation just needs to be "ok." Pettitte, Moose, Ponson, Giese, Kennedy, Hughes- I think all of them are capable of being "ok". Go out there, give the team 6 innings, 3 runs, (4.5 ERA), turn a lead over to the pen, and win. Of course, the pen is going to give up some runs, and they've struggled a bit as a whole lately, but I think they're still a very good bullpen and will hold leads for this team down the stretch.

So offensive consistancy, and "ok" starting pitching will be enough to get the Yanks past the rest of the AL contenders who are all sputtering.
