This game shouldn't have been this dramatic. Mike Mussina gave the Yankees another very good start and was inline to pick up his 16th victory of the year after leaving the game after 7 with a 6-3 lead. Mussina allowed 3 runs on 8 hits tonight, while striking out 5 and walking 1. But once again the bullpen could was unable to hold a lead. Tonight's culprits were Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera.
Marte has really been a disappointment since coming over from
The rest of the bullpen did their jobs. Jose Veras was great tonight throwing two perfect innings, while striking out two. He picked up his third win of the season. And Edwar Ramirez picked up his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 12th.
The Yankees offense was good enough, but they're still failing to do the little things. They failed several times when they had chances to add an insurance run with a sac fly, or a ground ball, and it almost cost them the game. They probably should have had 8 or 9 runs going into the 8th.
Johnny Damon got the Yankees on the board early with a leadoff homer in the first. Damon went 3-for-6 on the day, with an RBI, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base.
Xavier Nady added two more in the 4th with a two out, two-run double. He would drive in two more runs with a two-run homer in the 12th two batters after A-Rod's homer. He went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, four RBI, and a run scored.
Derek Jeter had a very good game going 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Bobby Abreu and Wilson Betemit drove in a run each.
It was great to see A-Rod step up tonight when the Yankees really needed it. He has been invisible in big spots this year, and if the Yankees are going to make a miracle run at this he's going to have be the A-Rod of last year down the stretch.
This was a big win for the Yankees tonight. A loss would have dropped them to six back in the Wild Card and would have been crippling. And losing it with Mo on the mound and a 6-3 lead would have made it that much worse.

The brilliant Moose doesn't need to pitch like a 45-year-old lefty, but Chien-ming Wang should learn to run around the bases like Jamie Moyer.
The Marte-Rivera combination is horrible.
Yea, I'm very concerned about Marte. He look really bad. Mo just made a stupid pitch. Not an excuse, just a reason.
But like I said in the post, Mo has been a little off, too many bad pitches. He needs to get back to how he had been pitching.
Marte makes me miss Farnsworth.
Mo has had his ups and downs. Last year he was off to a horrible start and finished strong. This year he had an amazing start and now is struggling a bit. He's still the man though.
At least we won! Hey I just checked and www.putCanoOnWaivers.net is avaiable as a domain name, anyone else interested?
Hahahahaha
No Veras for honorable mention? hmmmm...
No, he did what he was supposed to do. It's about time someone in this pen did their job.
