You gotta give Sidney Ponson a ton of credit, it hasn't always been pretty but he really has done a nice job as a Yankee, and the Yankees have won five of the seven games he's started. Tonight he held the Rangers to three runs and six hits over 6.1 innings pitched, he also walked one and struck out four.
Unlike the last few nights, tonight the bullpen did it's job. Edwar Ramirez pitched 1 inning of scoreless ball. Damaso Marte and Jose Veras both faced, and retired one batter apiece. And Mariano Rivera returned, and picked up his 27th save of the year in 27 opportunities.

RANGERS PITCHING
Considering the Yankees usually make young pitchers they've never seen before look like Cy Young, I'll look at tonight's five runs against Tommy Hunter as a success.
After striking out three in the first two inning it started to look like he was on his way to a dominant performance, but the Yankees were able to get on the board with three runs in the 3rd. The first run came on a Wilson Betemit RBI double. Another run came on a Johnny Damon RBI ground out, and the third run scored on Derek Jeter's RBI single.
Jason Giambi homered to leadoff the 4th to give the Yanks a 4-2 lead. The homer was Giambi's 22nd of the season.
And the fifth and final run came on a Jeter RBI double in the 5th.
Damon, Jeter, Abreu and Molina all had mutli-hit games.
I'm very glad to see Jeter have a big game, he's been pretty awful since being hit on the hand by Daniel Cabrera, and if he can start to hit it might give this lineup a huge boost.
Ivan Rodriguez had to leave the game after bruising his knee when David Murphy collided with Pudge at home plate (Murphy was out). It doesn't appear to be anything major, and he's listed as day-to-day.

No question Greg, the Yankees' fortunes will improve if and when Jeter gets hot at the plate. Ponson has impressed me especially the last couple starts, which were huge. He settled in very well after the rough second. The top of the order was big--6-14 for JD, Jeter, and Abreu. But Betemit and Molina, filling in for Pudge after he made that tough, great play at home on Murphy, were solid as well. Rolling over the lineup is vital. Nady needs to lay off the high fastballs (2 K's in the last two games on high heat) but really cranks the ball when he gets a hold of it.
Hopefully, the bullpen can stay closer to this than the wretched form they collectively assumed the previous three games. The team combined gave up only one walk today, much better than the 21 the three previous games.
Get the split, guys.
What a game.
You don’t get to see two All-Star shortstops fall asleep in the same inning.
I really think MLB should ban baserunners from crashing into the catchers.
After all, this is baseball, not Rugby.
