You get the feeling that whatever the Yankees do they won't be able to beat this freaking team. Tonight they get 7 innings of shutout baseball from Sidney Ponson of all people, and still could not come away with a win against the mighty Angels of Anaheim. Ponson did walk four, but held the Angels to just two hits. He was also helped out by several nice defensive plays on hard hit balls, but he still gave the Yankees a great performance tonight, earned at least one more start in pinstripes, and deserved a win.
Damaso Marte looked very good in his inning of work; he struck out two of the three batters he faced.
And that gets us to Mariano Rivera, more specifically, Mariano Rivera's problems in non-save situations. It's like he's two different pitchers; in save situations he has a 0.33 ERA, and he's allowed just 12 hits in 27.1 IP, and in non-save situations he's 4-4, with a 3.00 ERA, and he's allowed 18 hits in 21 IP. It's really amazing. Tonight was the 3rd time in a row Mariano has given up a run in a non-save situation. Makes you wonder if it's in his head, and if Girardi should maybe start thinking of using other guys in these spot. I know it sounds crazy, but maybe Mo should just stick to save situations for a while.

ANGELS PITCHING
Oh, if only this team could hit. Tonight was another night of missed opportunities for this terribly un-clutch offense. I'm starting to wonder if anyone in this lineup actually has a backbone.
Let's start with the first inning when Damon led off with a walk and Jeter followed with a single, so the Yanks had two on with nobody out, and the 3-4-5 hitters coming up. But Abreu and A-Rod both strike out, and Giambi pops out.
Then in 4th Abreu leads off with a single. Now, I'd like to see A-Rod take a few pitches here, maybe let Abreu get a lead and steal a bag, but of course not. Instead he's overanxious and pops out on the first pitch he sees.
In the next inning the Yankees get the leadoff man on again when Wilson Betemit singled. But the newly acquired Ivan Rodriguez bangs into a double play to quickly put that threat to bed. Can he bunt?
The Yankees once again had the leadoff man on, this time Johnny Damon led off the 6th with a single. Now remember, the score is 0-0 in the bottom of the 6th and you have a very good bunter at the plate in Derek Jeter, so why not just bunt and get the runner over? Who knows, maybe he even gets a hit out of it. But no, they call for the hit and run, which is better than nothing, but still it's more risky than a bunt. - And for those who believe it was a straight steal (I don't), if that was the case Jeter should have taken a pitch and let Damon steal the base. - Anyway, Jeter popped out on the first pitch and the Yankees got nothing.
Angels' starter Ervin Santana pitched 8 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out eight. He pitched very well, but as I already mentioned the Yankees had their chances and did not take advantage of any of them, but hey, what else is new?
