(AAA) Scranton (88-56) beat Pawtucket in game 3 of the International League playoffs 6-4 (SWB leads series 2-1): Box Score - Recap
PITCHING: Kei Igawa got the start and the win for the Yankees. Igawa came into the game with a 14-6 record and 3.45 ERA. He was 9-1 at home. Igawa got off to a shaky start the first 2 innings, stranding 2 runners in each inning. He threw a perfect 3rd inning. Pawtucket scored 2 runs in the 4th. They loaded the bases on an infield hit, catcher's interference, and walk. A 2-run single scored the runs to make the score SWB 3-2. Igawa finished with perfect 5th, 6h, and 7th innings.
Igawa's line: 7.0 IP, 2 runs, 5 hits, 4 K's--3 walks. 103 pitches--67 strikes. 10 groundouts--7 flyouts.
Steven Jackson came on to pitch the 8th inning. Jackson gave up a 2-run homer to cut the Yankee lead to 6-4. Scott Strickland got the final out on a strikeout. Strickland pitched a perfect 9th, getting 2 more strikeouts to pick up the save.
OFFENSE: The Yankees broke out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Justin Christian singled, a wild pitch and groundout moved him to 3rd. He scored on a Juan Miranda RBI groundout. SWB took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Ben Broussard doubled and Matt Carson was HBP. Broussard moved to 3rd when pitcher Adam Mills had a throwing error on a pickoff throw to 1st base. Nick Green followed with a RBI single. In the 4th, SWB scored 3 more runs when Eric Duncan hit a 3-run homer to make the score 6-2 at that time.
NOTES: Tim Battle was called up from the Tampa roster to replace Melky Cabrera. Matt Carson replaced Melky in center for the game. Juan Miranda was named SWB Player of the Year. Kei Igawa named SWB Pitcher of the Year. Phil Hughes goes for the series clincher Saturday against Bartolo Colon. The other first round game between Durham and Louisville was rained out.
I noted yesterday that the Yankees are sending Andrew Brackman, 2008 draft pick Jeremy Bleich and Austin Romine, to Hawaii for winter ball, today they added Damon Sublett to the list.
