Girardi Sticking With Ponson

From Mark Feinsand:
Sidney Ponson has been brutal in his last three starts, yet when the Yankees take the field Saturday in Seattle, the 31-year-old righthander will be back on the mound.

Ponson's job is secure, according to manager Joe Girardi, even though he has allowed 24 hits and six walks in his last 9-2/3innings over three starts, posting a 15.84 ERA in that stretch.

"Right now, our rotation is what it is," Girardi said. "We haven't talked about any changes."

"Sidney has done it before," Girardi said. "He didn't have the sinker (Monday) that he's had, so we have to get that back. He'll go back to the bullpen and see if he can straighten things out."

Why?

Why would Girardi stick with him for another start with the way he's been pitching? We all know how bad he's been lately, does Girardi? It wasn't just Monday when "he didn't have the sinker." He hasn't even gone more than 4 innings in his last three starts, and he has an ERA of 6.22 as a Yankee.

Please Joe, just start someone else.

You can't blame Joe Girardi for all the Yanks' many problems this season but one thing I can't accept is his public persona. He continually tries to cover up the truth. Does he think we are all fools? Ponson is a bum. Always has been. Always will be. We were lucky enough to get a few wins out of him. Now we are seeing the REAL Sidney Ponson. It's one thing protecting your players; another telling pork pies (Cockney rhyming slang) to the media and fans. Say it ain't so Joe?

I totally agree about Ponson, and expected his last start to his final one as a Yankee. His last two have been brutal, and a 6.22 ERA as a Yankee can come from just about anyone, up to and including (gulp!) Igawa. I'd sooner give Aceves or Hughes a shot. Ponson hasn't been good and isn't close to being a long-term answer.

I agree with you about Girardi's PR (in-)abilities, Bruce. His outright lies about injuries have infuriated me, so often for no good reason and well after any potential "usefulness" to lying about them. He's done some things well this year but, among other things, his dealings with the media need some serious improvement for next year--presuming he's here.

goddamn it! boston come back and won. i'm beginning to believe we have a better shot at winning the division. if we sweep the rays twice and the red sox sweep one or both times( 1-5 vs boston), and then they lose 2 or 3 out of 4 to the twins, along with losing other series we may be able to catch them. we just need to go 20-4 or so, 95% we dont do that. who knows, the mets blew it last year. actually if we go 19-5, the rays go 8-18, and we finish ahead of them, and hope that one of the twins/ white sox dont make it. we have 4 against chicago, so hope for the twins, and since the vs the rays 4 times too. i'm just wishcasting here, along with most yankee fans.

What do you think the media does TELL the truth? Are you that dumb? The word media doesn't mean truth. I don't blame Girardi at all, the media forces him to answer the questions the way he does. The media = SCUMBAGS like Feinsand, Hoch, et al. Americans think the tv and newspaper is the truth HAHAHAHAHAH. Absolute fools.

I remember reading how everyone wanted Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy to get chance after chance when both of them started 0-5 and 0-4. And now Ponson loses 3 in a row, but the team has won 7 games he has pitched in. He has not been good this season, but it seems like everyone is looking for the smallest things to place blame on Girardi.

Joe, I understand that, and I'm not blaming Girardi for everything, but if he starts Ponson again it's a mistake. Do you think Ponson deserves to start again?

anonymous 2,

What the fuck are you talking about?
