Moose Still Unsure About '09

From Mark Feinsand:

Most baseball insiders believe that Mike Mussina is ready to take his 270 wins and ride off into the sunset.

Of course, the only opinion that matters is Mussina's, and the pitcher hasn't spent much time thinking about his future since the Yankees' season ended nine days ago.

Reached Monday at his home in Montoursville, Pa., Mussina told the Daily News that he is still undecided when it comes to playing next season.

"Not yet," Mussina said when asked if he was close to a verdict. "I'm just enjoying being home right now."

"I haven't really put a timetable on it," Mussina said of his decision. "The playoffs are still going on and it still seems like the season just ended. I'm not rushing after it, but I know sooner or later I'm going to have to figure out what I want to do."
After beating the Red Sox on Sept. 28 for No. 20, Mussina said he was "completely satisfied" with his career if this were the end, though he left the door open for a return and a run at 300 wins.

"As of right now, it's my last game in my last year, so I don't know what the future holds," Mussina said at Fenway Park that night. "It could be my last year or it may not be my last year, but when you get to your 18th season, it could always be your last year."

I'm still going to remain optimistic about Mussina coming back. I think that once December and January roll around he's going to start to get that itch to play again - his brother feels the same way.

If not the Yankees are going to miss him. Even if they sign CC that would leave them with just three set starters; CC, Wang, and Joba. So then they'd have to hope Pettitte comes back - which he probably will, and then they'd still have to go out and sign another pitcher, probably someone like Derek Lowe or Oliver Perez. I'm not a fan of Lowe or Perez, I'd much rather bring back Moose. .

They could always sign CC, and then trade for another starter, like Peavy. There is no reason the Yankees should not go out and get whoever they want with all the money that is being freed up.

I think he should come back because if he goes, then they have to got Hughes

Cashman needs to sign CC and go after whomever they can get with Cano and another player or two. Whehter it is Peavy or whomever. The reason the Red Sox are so good is because of their starting pitching. Cashman is reallly a moron and is responsible for our decline over the last 8 years. Our pitchign staff just keeps getting worse and worse under him. What a terrible decision to extend him. If he doesn't fix the problem this off-season then I will stop watching the Yankees DUE to him. The buck stops with him. He must fix the pitching this off-season and he has NO EXCUSE whatsoever. NONE. If they can't fix the hitting woes but they 100% fix the pitchign then I dont have a problem with that. But fix the pitching staff NOW.

While I think the Yankees will probably want to go into the spring with more than four "definite" starters, I still think that you can bank on at the very least one, if not two, of the following: Hughes, Kennedy, Aceves, Giese, Wright, MacCutchen, etc. I think that it's almost definite one of those guys will be the #5. Clearly Hughes is the leading candidate, but I'm not counting Ian out of the mix yet for a future role on the team.

If they sign CC, then Wang, Hughes, Joba, and one of Moose/Pettitte/other would probably be the rotation. If it's Moose, then I feel more comfortable about things. If it's one of the "other" guys I mentioned above, then it's a little bit more shaky.

That's one of the reasons I wouldn't be totally against looking into a guy like Lowe or Garland who can eat some innings and give you a bit of a veteran presence, especially if Moose and Pettitte don't come back.

I still really worry about what we'll get out of CC coming off such a high inning total, but beyond that what we'll get when he's 33-34 years old, in the 5th year of a 7 year deal, for example. Still, I guess they really have no choice at this point but to make a play for him, especially as a free agent as opposed to someone you'd have to give up prospects for. The Yankees can afford the $, but you don't want to give away talent if you don't have to.

Pinstripes,

I agree that they can bank on at least one of those guys, but McCutchen was traded for Nady and Marte, so he's out. Besides that I agree completely.

CC may not give us what we're hoping, but what other options do we have. Plus there is always the chance he will give the Yanks exactly what we're hoping for.

Liam,

I'm glad your sister likes this site. I hope all Yankee fans do.
