A longtime friend of Andy Pettitte reiterated that the left-hander intends to pitch in 2009 -- and there is a growing sense Mike Mussina may return for another season, as well, although Mussina has not indicated a final decision, one way or another. If this was the NY Post I wouldn't make much of it, but Olney tends to know his stuff.
(hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors)
I hope they both come back. The Yankees need as much starting pitching as they can get, and as they say, you can never have too much starting pitching.
I wouldn't mind going into the season with a rotation of CC, Wang, Moose, Joba, and Pettitte. Would you?

What about Hughes? He has nothing left to prove in the minors?
Don't you feel Pettitte has lost his stuff?
considering we had a rotation of only pettitte and moose and unreliable 3,4,5's for almost the whole year, that rotation looks great. hopefully pettitte and moose wont ask for more than $12-13million a year. i would like to stay under 200 million and add cc and tex at the same time.
The Yankees are going to have to be very creative with their starters next year because of Joba, and his innings. He's not going to be able to throw 200 innings next year, unless of course the Yankees like the idea of having him on the DL for most of 2010.
There has been talk about him skipping a start every now and then, and I've even seen some people suggest a six man rotation.
Also, there are always injuries, so I'm sure a spot will open at some point in the year.
This could open the door for Hughes. But as of right now, I don't think the Yankees should rely on him.
As for Pettitte, no I don't think his problems this year were because he lost his stuff. He was battling an nagging shoulder injury for most of the second half, and he was coming off the most hectic offseason of his life and did not train the same way he normally does.
I think between the injury and his offseason, it all caught up with him in the second half of the season. He pitched fine for the first half, and I think that's the Pettitte we will see next year.
By the way, I definitely think Hughes has proven all he needs to in the minors, but that doesn't mean he has to be in the Yankees rotation in April. He'll get there eventually.
I do not have a problem with that rotation, the continuing Joba Saga looms still though. I think Joba will be a great starter but I worry he may be like Burnett, Penny, or even Prior. Will he get injured all the time? It makes me think a rotation of CC, Greinke, Wang, Mussina, and Pettite would be better. I know you are kind of wasting Joba's arm in the bullpen but if it keeps him healthy, I am all for it.
The fact that Joba can't pitch 200 innings without fear of injury tells me that we'd be better off with him in the pen. But what the hell....I'm no expert. As long as we get back where we belong I'm happy!
Mike
Hughes should begin the season in Triple-A and be the leading candidate for promotion once one of the starters hits the DL
I feel the same way Jeteristheman.
