11/9 Winter Ball Report

In the AFL the Peoria Javelinas lost to the Surprise Rafters 9-6: Box Score - Recap - Game Story

Phil Hughes started for the Javelinas and continued his inconsistent winter. After having a great outing his last time out he followed it with a very unimpressive 2.1 innings today. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3. He threw 72 pitches, 40 for strikes.

Kevin Whelan pitched 1.2 innings in relief. He didn't allow a run, he walked 2 and struck out 2. He threw 32 pitches, 15 for strikes.

Humberto Sanchez pitched one third of an inning and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. He threw 23 pitches, 11 for strikes.

Kevin Russo went 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Austin Jackson went 3-for-4, with a double and three runs scored. He was also hit by a pitch.

Austin Romine went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Damon Sublett went 0-for-3 with a walk.

Other Yankees are playing in the Venezuelan, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Dominican winter leagues. Here's a run down of the players in each league:

Venezuelan League: Francisco Cervelli is playing for Cardenales de Lara. Reegie Corona is on Navegantes del Magallanes.

Puerto Rican League: Ian Kennedy and Jonathan Albaladejo are on Indios de Mayaguez. Jose Molina is on Leones de Ponce.

Dominican League: Matt Carson and Wilkins Arias are playing for Aguilas Cibaenas. And Jhonny Nunez and Amaury Sanit are playing for Tigres del Licey. Wilson Betemit is player for Leones del Escogido.

Mexican League: Justin Christian is playing for Caneros de los Mochis. And Walter Ibarra is on Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Phil Hughes made his 1st start Monday after missing a turn with a torn fingernail. He had a perfect game going until a single broke it up with 2 outs in the 5th inning. He had 8 strikeouts and no walks. Hughes also started Saturday. He struggled with his command. He lasted only 2.1 IP, 2 runs, 4 hits, 4 walks--3 strikeouts. AFL totals: 20 IP, 10 runs, 17 hits (2 HR), 22 K's--12 BB

Ian Kennedy made his first start as the Puerto Rican league opened Friday. Kennedy is pitching for Mayaguez. He threw 4 no-hit, shutout innings. He had 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, and a HBP.

Andrew Brackman lasted only 3.1 innings Wed allowing 7 earned runs on 3 hits, but 7 walks. He had 6 strikeouts. HWL totals--7 Gms, 29 IP, 19 runs, 27 hits, 33 K's--20 walks.

Jeremy Bleich continues to pitch very well at Hawaii. Friday he threw 5 shutout innings with 9 strikeouts, 4 hits, 0 walks. He's allowed only 2 runs over his last 4 starts. HWL totals 3-1, 2.05 ERA, 30.2 IP, 7 runs, 24 hits, 30K's--9 BB.

Humberto Sanchez threw 1 scoreless inning in relief Wed. Saturday he had a rough game lasting only .1 IP, 2 runs, 2 hits (triple, double), and 2 walks. AFL totals----7 Gms, 7.2 IP, 13 runs, 15 hits, 3 K's--8 walks.

Jeff Marquez pitched very well Thursday in his 3rd start at Arizona. Marquez threw 5 shutout innings allowing 5 hits. He had 3 K's. AFL totals 18.1 IP, 8 runs, 18 hits, 17 K's--8 walks.

Kevin Whelan made 2 relief appearances each for 1.2 innings this week. He allowed 1 unearned run, 1 hit, 6 K's--3 walks. AFL totals---8 Gms. 13.1 IP, 1 run (HR), 7 hits, 16 K--9 walks.

Austin Jackson finished the week going 3-4 Saturday, with 3 runs scored, after going 2-16 in the previous 4 games. AFL Totals--.247 (21-85), 11 RBI, 13 runs, 1 HR, 3 triples, 2 doubles, 20 K's--4 walks.

Juan Miranda played his first game Thursday in about 11 days. He came back with a 2-run homer. Friday he had 4 strikeouts. He did not play Sat. AFL totals--.300 (15-50), 9 rbi, 9 runs, 2 HR, 6 doubles, 2 triples 16 K--6 walks.

Kevin Russo continued his hot hitting, extending his hit streak to 17 games. For the week he went 7-21, 1 HR, 2 doubles, 4 RBI. AFL totals--.351 (27-77), 2 HR, 11 rbi, 11 runs, 18 K's--3 walks.

Wilson Betemit playing for Esquido in the Dominican league in his first 3 games went 0-7 with 3 strikeouts--2 walks. No surprise there.

Justin Christian's bat has started to come alive in the Mexican league. For the week he was 6 15 with a 3-run homer and 7 RBI. MWL totals--.263 (25-95), 12 RBI, 14 runs, 2 HR, 7 stolen bases.

Austin Romine played in 3 games in Hawaii this week going 3-12 with 2 RBI, and RBI double. HWL totals---..224 (15-49) 4 RBI, 8 runs, 8 K--7 walks.

Damon Sublett was 1-10 in 3 games at Hawaii with an RBI double. HWL totals---.262 (16-61) 16 RBI, 13 runs, 2 HR, 20 K's--3 walks.

Reegie Corona was 4-15 for the week in Venezulea with 2 RBI. VWL totals---.310 (13-42) 7 rbi, 9 runs, 1 HR, 5 doubles.

Walter Ibarra was 4-12 in 4 games in the Mexican league. MWL totals---.268 (11-41), 1 RBI, 3 runs, 9 K's---4 walks.

Wilkins Arias appeared in 1 game in the Dominican league going .2 IP allowing 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. DWL totals---7 Gms. 5 IP, 8 runs, 6 hits, 7 K's--5 walks.

Inconsistency. This is the reason why Hughes needs to go now.

Most 22 years old pitchers are inconsistent with their command. That's hardly a reason he needs to go.

Santana was inconsistent at that age so was, AJ Burnett, Lowe, Peavy, and many others, yet you want us to trade him for those players and then watch him turn to be the next star in this league.

Trading Hughes is the stupidest thing you can do right now. Keep him... the Yankees better not trade this kid.

You have a great point. When we traded Jeff K. to the Pirates, he almost threw a no hitter and he ended up being there best pitcher.
