Monday's Rumors

Here's some of today's Hot Stove rumors from around baseball.

- The Mets will make offers this week to some of their free agent targets including Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes and Derek Lowe.

- Boston may trade Julio Lugo for Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson.

- Kat O'Brien - and the Yankees - expect Mike Mussina to come to a decision about his future in the next few days. ... Mussina spoke with The Star Ledger's Ed Price and said he decision "might be this week":
"It might be this week," he said today by phone from his home in Montoursville, Pa. "It's got to be soon. I can't leave people hanging, wondering what I'm going to do.

"Pretty soon here we'll figure something out."

He also said money is not an issue.

- If you were hoping that the Yankees might make a run at a catcher not named Rodriguez or Varitek, another name that has been thrown around is Jarrod Saltalamacchia of the Rangers. However, according to Peter Gammons they told the Red Sox they wanted Clay Buchholz or two of Justin Masterson/Nick Hagadone/Michael Bowden in return for him. So in other words, I doubt Cashman would give up a package like that for a catcher.

- Not a rumor or MLB related, but check out this story out from Japan: "A 16-year-old schoolgirl with a mean knuckleball has been selected as the first woman ever to play alongside the men in Japanese professional baseball." She was drafted by a new independent league that will start in April.

- Go vote for Mariano as Closer of the Year.

That's about it for now, I will add more as I find out about them... MLB will announce the NL MVP award winner today at 2:00 p.m. Who do you think will win it? I'm going to say Albert Pujols.

I can't believe the Met's are considering Rodriguez, I really think he's overrated. I also don't know why the Yankees are planning on making Lowe an offer, do they need more aging, veteran pitchers?

Is Saltalamacchia really worth what the Rangers are asking?

Nice post man

Jarrod S is more like it. For now i'm saying Albert for mvp. Can you have pitchers for MVP greg? If so i'm going to say Tim L. og the giants.

Thanks Rad,

I don't think they need Lowe either, but he might be their only option if Burnett signs elsewhere and Moose retires.

And no, I don't think Saltalamacchia is worth all that.

Liam,

Saltalamacchia is a much better option than Pudge and Varitek, but the asking price will be way too high.

And yes a pitcher could win the MVP.

I liked pudge when he was pudgey. And if Molina was a better hitter, then we wouldn't be talking about getting another catcher.

Julio Lugo for Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson?
Have the Tigers lost their brain???

Greg Cohen said...

Apparently they're very desperate for a short stop.

Then they should have asked the Yankees for Wilson Betemit.
Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson for Julio Lugo?
Jesus Christ!

Does the Yankees looking for a catcher talk scare anyone else into believing that Jorge Posada was resigned for four seasons to essentially be a DH, and possibly transition to being a below average first baseman? How many road blocks do the Yanks want to put in their lineup anyhow?

It worries me a little. His shoulder injury really came out of nowhere, though.

However, from everything I've heard the Yankees are confident that his rehab is going well and see him as their opening day catcher.
