Yanks To Make Early (Huge) Offer to Sabathia

From Buster Olney:
As the saying goes, if you have to look at the price tag, you probably can't afford the cost, and other teams will shudder at the Sabathia price tag, as set by the Yankees. Today, they are expected to offer Sabathia a record-setting deal, right out of the gate.
The highest multi-year deal ever given to a pitcher was signed by Johan Santana. For six years, he received a deal that in present-day value is gauged at about $20.5 million per year; on its face, without accounting for the loss of value because of deferred money, the Santana contract was for $137.5 million.

No matter which standard you want to use, the Yankees intend to surpass it. The deal they will offer Sabathia will be for more than the present-day value of $20.5 million per year, and it will be worth more than the $137.5 million, with deferrals included. The Yankees' first offer will be for something in the range of $140-$142 million.
Wow, that's quite an offer. But is it an offer he can't refuse? We will see.

Do you think the offer is a good one? Too much? Too little? Let me know what you think.

And according to Jon Heyman the Yankees will also make offers to free agent pitchers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe in the next day or two. He also said that they remain interesting in Manny Ramirez, but they're focusing on pitching first. And since they just traded for Nick Swisher it's unlikely that they will make a run at Mark Teixeira.

Well, they're certainly being aggressive, hopefully it pays off in the end.

UPDATE: Buster Olney is now reporting that the Yankees have officially tendered an offer to CC. Somewhere around 6 years $140 million.

The Daily News has confirmed that the Yankees have in fact offered a record-breaking 6-year $140 million dollar deal to CC Sabathia.

There is no point offering an enormous contract early. Wait a few days, put in the initial offer and see if other teams can match it. We don't need to overpay if we don't have to.

Agree.

We need to still be in contention for Texiera

there's a good and bad to this: obviously, we could be bidding against ourselves here. but also with a high offer, it detracts the amount of negotiation time by immediately removing teams out of contention. this is going to be a busy offseason, and the quicker they can get certain transactions done, the better it will be.

Hey, might as well get this out of the way now and be ready to go full steam ahead for Teixeira

I'm all in favor of the Yankees trying to get the pitching done quickly

Completely agree

please don't hurt yourself if we don't get Teixeira.

I agree with Anon #3. A premtive strike to get the pretenders out of the picture. Plus, NY probably has other decisions to make that hinge upon CC's decision. Now, CC just need to decide if we wants to be in NY or not. I'm guessing he's had enough time to decide that already.

Heheh... I guess it's a well-known fact I want Teixeira

It's just I think he's a perfect fit at 1B for years to come and the Yankees have the money to get him. What's there to hate about the guy?

and for the record, no I won't do any bodily harm to myself if the Yankees don't sign Teixeira

I think anon #3 is right as well, jeterishteman. The 6 year, $140 million offer was meant to put dibs on Sabathia and whittle down the field to a couple other teams, at most. The Angels have many free agents to sign or let go, and Teixeira will command big bucks from them to stay. This was a good bold move and, honestly, I don't think Sabathia would have come much if any cheaper than what the Yanks offered. I like that they showed strong early interest in him.

If the Yanks sign Teixeira (which I'd love but don't expect), I'll flip out with glee.

I agree with those of you who are saying that CC wasn't going to sign for much less than what was offered. He knows how badly teams (especially the Yankees) want him and he knows what kind of contracts pitchers like Zito and Santana got.

I have no problem with this offer at all.

I don't feel all that comfortable with throwing bags of money at guy who is close to 300 pounds at 28 and is only going to get heavier and less effective over the course of this contract. Will he have the same stuff at 30 or 31 that he has now while putting on more weight?

Danny, he was thinner a few years ago than he is now, but he's coming off his best two seasons of his career. Two seasons where he was at his fattest. As long as he and the Yankees can maintain his weight where it is and he doesn't gain another 50 lbs I don't see it becoming an issue.

i think they might have to offer him more. people were saying 6 years 150-155 mil a few days ago.

If 6/140 gets it done, I'll be plenty happy.
