Angels Out Of Teixeira Sweepstakes

From Jerry Crasnick:

The Los Angeles Angels withdrew their eight-year offer for free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira on Sunday.

Angels vice president of communications Tim Mead confirmed an earlier ESPN report later Sunday night. The Angels' departure from the Teixeira sweepstakes leaves the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles as the four teams still in the mix for the premier position player in this winter's free-agent market.

The offer was reportedly worth $160 million over eight years. Late last week it was the Red Sox, and their owner John Henry who said that they wouldn't be a factor in the Teixeira bidding, whatever that meant. Many people still feel they will get back into it, though.

As for the Angels, I wonder if they pulled their offer because of Teixeira's desire to play on the east coast, or if they felt that even if he would sign with them it would be too costly.

Does this open the door for the Yankees to come swoop in?

Of course it opens the door, for a potential Yankees/Red Sox bidding war that Cashman doesn't seem too interested to be a part of. He seems very content with the way the team is now so i'd be very surprised if we acquired either Tex or Manny.

You're right, he probably wants nothing to do with a bidding war with Boston, but I don't think he's as content with the team as he lets on.

Many people within the organization want to add a bat, and I think they're just weighing their options.
