Speculation to the contrary, the Yankees are not "all in" on Manny Ramirez or Mark Teixeira. She goes on to say that the Yankees have more interest in Teixeira than Manny, which is pretty much the opposite we've been hearing/reading for the last few days.
The Yankees have not ruled out adding Ramirez or Teixeira, but they have yet to make an offer to either slugger. In fact, one person familiar with the Yankees' thinking said the baseball operations people have not even discussed Ramirez at any length. They have talked about Teixeira, but he might be too costly after adding CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett.
"We're monitoring the situation, but we have not made an offer," a team source said. "We may not make an offer. If the money gets too rich, then we won't."
Reports are that Teixeira has offers of $150 million-plus from the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals and Orioles. A Yankees source suggested that reports are not always accurate.
And she also says that "it is unlikely the Yankees will jump into the Teixeira bidding unless they move salary and/or go cheap with the No. 5 spot in the rotation."
Regardless of who it is, I really think this team needs a bat.

Could you imagine Manny with all the young hitters who struggled last season (Cano and Melky)? They would definitely benefit from the addition of Manny. They love to have fun playing the game, and Manny is Manny, so naturally I think Manny would round out the offense and really help everybody to just LOOSEN UP! At least they won't look like twigs out there when they ground into their countless double plays.
And with Manny hitting the way he does with RISP will take a ton of pressure off Alex, and the rest of the Yankees, who won't feel like they have to be "the man" anymore. Manny would do a lot to earn his $25 million a season, and the third year isn't that big of a deal to me. For the last season, the Yankees will be sure to leave the DH role open for him, and Matsui won't be here hogging the DH for himself.
Yes, you're right.
Now that both Abreu and the Big G are gone, the Yankees must find one or two power hitters to fill the void or there'll be no postseason again next season.
If Hal and Cash fail to sign Manny or Teixeira, they'd better trade for someone like Josh Hamilton.
It is simply profligate waste to not go cheap with that 5th starter. Why on earth would you spend even $10 million on a spot that will be passed over as often as not? What's wrong with using Hughes/Kennedy/Aceves/etc. in that fifth spot, anyway?
Much better to go big with Tex. Even at longer contract there is less risk there than with another pricey pitcher.
Maybe the Yankees should just sign bern baby bern! he is going to tear up the WBC, mi gente su gente!
it's funny how the Yanks haven't been linked to Adam Dunn. Younger and cheaper since there's no market for him right now.
Adam put himself in a odd situation, at first it was believed that he wasn't performing better for lack of motivation (playing for the Reds) he was traded and publicly came out and said he was going to be motivated and he was going to do anything to help AZ, after he was traded he didn't do too much to help his cause.
Let a youngin win the 5th starter spot. Then we can sign Tex....
Greg,
any Pettitte news? Whats going on? How long does it take to make a decision? I have been back and forth on this topic but I think we need Pettitte as the #5 starter because you know that during the season, a team never just uses the 5 starters intended. Between Joba's inning limitations and somebody inevitably ending up on the DL, wouldn't it be nice to know you have a Hughes or Kennedy waiting to fill in. I love the kids as a 6th starter.
I love the kids as the 5th starter...
Nah Peter, no Pettitte news.
Given all the pitching injuries the past few years, it would be nice to have 6-7 starting pitchers, even if that means Hughes & Co start out at AAA. Going after someone like Randy Wolf makes sense in that he's established and comes at a much more reasonable price than Pettitte. Given their starting 4 pitchers, they could even take a chance on Penny or Prior. The extra money they save on the #5 starter can go to Tex!!!!
