1/6 Winter Ball Report

Dominican Winter League

- Melky Cabrera (Aguilas) went 1-for-5 with a RBI. He's now hitting .355.

Venezuelan Winter League

- Luis Nunez (Zulia) went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

News & Notes: The Boston Globe is reporting that Nick Green has signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox. The deal includes an invitation to spring training.

Here's some more from Chad Jennings:

Green had a bad year with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and if he were somehow sitting in my seat, he'd write the same thing. We talked about it a few times at the end of the season and when he was clearly frustrated. Although he hit 12 home runs -- a solid number for a shortstop/second baseman -- he batted just .233 and made a team-high 19 errors. By his standards, it wasn't good.

Here's a full list of Yankees playing in the Venezuelan, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Dominican winter leagues:

Dominican Winter League:
Robinson Cano and Wady Rufino are playing for Estrellas de Oriente. Melky Cabrera and Wilkins Arias are playing for Aguilas Cibaenas. Abraham Almonte is playing for Leones del Escogido. And Juan Mirana and Amaury Sanit are playing for Tigres del Licey.

Mexican Pacific League: Ramiro Pena and Jorge Vasquez are playing for Tomateros de Culiacan. And Walter Ibarra is on Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

Puerto Rican Winter League: Ian Kennedy and Jonathan Albaladejo are on Indios de Mayaguez. And Bernie Williams will play for Gigantes de Carolina.

Venezuelan Winter League: Francisco Cervelli, Edwar Gonzalez and Carlos Mendoza are playing for Cardenales de Lara. And Edgar Soto and Luis Nunez are on Aguilas del Zulia.

How many extra base hits does Melky have this winter?

In the DWL regular season he had 7 in 24 games. I'm not sure how many he's had in the playoffs.

I'll be interested to learn what his OBP and SLG are for all off-season games. I'll be encouraged if, on top of that nice batting average, he posts .350+ and .400+, respectively.

So far so good for Melky. During the regular season his OBP was .393, and his slg% was .409.

Not too shabby. He was a non-existent .249/.301/.341 during '08 MLB season.
