The AL East Just Got A Little Tougher

According to Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney, the Tampa Bay Rays have signed free agent outfielder Pat Burrell to a two-year $16 million deal.

Olney says that Burrell is expected to be the Rays' DH most of the time.

Last year with the world champion Phillies Burrell hit .250/.367/.507 with 33 HR and 86 RBI. He will definitely be a nice addition to the Rays' lineup.

He would be good for the rays.

Decent move by the Rays, but I still think that they had way too much go right for them last year to contend again this year. Their starting pitching just won't hold up as well as it did last year.

I see something more along the lines of a .500 ball club.

I can't disagree with that Pinstripes.

Greg, how many wins will each AL East team finish with (your predictions)?

its funny, the Rays and Dolphins both overachieved this year, I also believe next year the Rays will come down a bit, along with the Dolphins. I think it will be back to the Yanks/Sox, with the Jays/Rays fighting for 3rd. The O's will just be a nuisance, and finish last, possibly 4th if the Jays completly fall apart.

Yeah, on my site I predicted they would finish up in 3rd place at 90-72, not making the playoffs.

MP,

I'd say the Yanks and Sox both win 96-99 games and battle for first place. The Rays will win 85-90, and I think the Jays and O's will both finish at or more likely, below .500.

But with that said, a lot can change between now and April.

What do you guys think?

i say:

1) NYY 96-66
2) BOS 92-70 Wild Card winner
3) TB 87-75
4) TOR 82-80
5) BAL 73-89

Yankeeboy98 I like all of your predictions, except I think the AL West will be closer between the A's and Angels, but the A's can def. win it. I like the D'Backs more if Manny doesnt go back to LA, they need to replace Lowe too. The Giants could surprise everybody, especially if they end up with Manny, and if Zito could regain some of his past success.

Brian Danuff said...

Yeah, you're right Greg. The Yankees and Sox probably will be neck & neck during the season.

Here's my (revised) AL East:

1) NYY (97-65)
2) BOS (95-67) (Wild Card)
3) TB (90-72)
4) TOR (80-82)
5) BAL (71-91)

Hopefully we won't end up as the 08 Tigers.

Brian Danuff said...

Oh my god. You're right. After Detroit got Cabrera, Willis, and Renteria, everybody thought they would win the world series. Look what happened.

I am going to go against the popular beliefs of you guys and say that the Rays are more dangerous than the Red Soxs. Sorry but their bullpen is the only thing holding them back. Their starting pitching is crazy good.

AL East
Yankees 98-64
Rays 93-69
Red Soxs 91-71
Orioles 73-89
Blue Jays 68-94

The Blue Jays really are bad people. Take a look at their rotation behind Halladay. Marcum and McGowan are injured. Halladay, Litsch, Richmond, Janssen, and Purcey won't get them to 500. Their offense has nice players but lack enough punch or experience. Their good bullpen will also become tired after bailing out the Rotation. This team won't be good, they'd be lucky to win 70 games. The Orioles suck as well.

I'd be shocked if the Rays win 90 games, and I'd honestly be quite surprised if they play anything over .500 ball.

I can't remember the last team that came out of nowhere to post a great season like they did, and then went on to maintain it. It takes years to slowly build up a quality franchise, it doesn't happen overnight. Just because TB had all these young players "hit" in the same season, doesn't mean they can all "hit" again in 2009. It's an incredibly difficult thing to ask these guys to all live up to their career years once again in 2009, especially for the pitching staff, which I feel is in for a hard crash back down to earth.
